Description

(No Model.)
A TOMLINSON WAGON TONGUE SUPPORT.
No. 506,567. Patented oat. 1o, 1893. V
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW TOMLINSON, OF PENFIELD, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,567, dated October 10, 1893. Application filed June 8, 1893. Serial No. 477,000- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW TOMLINSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Penfield, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon- Tongue Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon tongue supports; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a tongue support which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, and which when not in use will lie along the under side of the tongue, and which is adapted to be swung down to support the tongue in proper position.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing a wagon tongue support attached to the under side of the tongue. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the device lowered to support the tongue in a raised position.
A designates the hounds, to which the rear end of the wagon tongueis pivoted by a bolt a.
B designates the tongue, and C the whiffletree, the whiffietree being pivoted to the tongue by a bolt 0, which passes through the tongue and through the plate D to securely hold the same in position. The plate D is furthersecured to the under side of the tongue by a screw or bolt (1. To this plate is hinged an arm E, the outer end of which is provided with transverse serrated face on one side as shown.
F designates an extension bar, which is also provided with a serrated face and with a longitudinal slot f through which passes the threaded end of a bolt 6 passed through an aperture in the arm E, and upon this bolt is placed a thumb-nut which bears upon the extension bar and is adapted to bring the serrated faces of the arm and extension bar in contact. This extension bar is preferably rounded at its lower end and is adapted to engage with a spring clip G which is attached to the underside of the tongue and is adapted to hold the tongue support parallel with the tongue when it is not in use.
When it is desired to support the tongue the support is released from the spring clip and will automatically fall to a vertical position, and when in this position will hold the tongue raised instead of permitting the end' to bear upon the ground.
It will benoted that by this construction tongue in advance of the pivot which secures the tongue to the hounds of the wagon, and by providing the extension bar the Wagon tongue support can be lengthened or shortened to hold the tongue either in a horizontal position or in an upwardly inclined position.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a wagon tongue with a hinged support or prop carried by the forward end of the tongue and adapted when released from a spring catch to support the tongue in a horizontal position, and I do not claim such construction broadlyas myinvention; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ih combination with a wagon tongue, a support therefor comprising a plate which is secured to the under side of the tongue by the same belt which secures the whiffietree thereto, an arm E having a serrated face, and an extension bar F also provided with a serrated face and a longitudinal slot through which a connecting bolt passes, together with a spring ANDREW TOMLINSON.
