ANCHOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,694, dated August 22, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH W. BYRNE, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct an anchor, that maybe readily forged or cast, of such a form that the maximum amount of holding power may be obtained with a given weight. mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a general view of anchor; Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, elevation of crown and palms. Fig. 6 is a clamp.

The shank, A, Fig. 1, is furnished with a head, D, forming one piece with shank. The shank is made of a thickness to allow it to play easily in slot (shown in Figs. 1 and 4). The head, D, is made larger than width of slot. The purpose of this head is to prevent the shank being detached from crown, C.

I will now state the object of the lugs, E, Figs. 2, 3 and 4. In the position of crown, 0, shown in Figs.1 and 3, the lugs, E, Figs.3and 4, engage the head, D, and prevent this head from slipping toward center of crown, thus This object I attain by means of the holding the palms rigidly at the required angle with the shank, A, to cause the palms, B B, Figs. 1 and 3, to penetrate the ground on which the anchor may be dropped.

In the position of crown and palms, shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the lugs, E, again engage the head, D, as shown in Fig. 2, thus holding the palms, B, in an upright position, when the anchor is suspended by chain.

F, Figs. 1 and 6, represents clamps placed upon shank, by bolting, or other suitable device, their object being to prevent the shank being unshipped.

I claim In an anchor, the combination of a shank, having a head D at its palm end, a clamp F mounted on said shank, a slotted crown Chaving lugs E and palms B, said shank being adapted to pass through the slot in the crown, the head D serving to hold said crown, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
