Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY JEFFREY, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
CLAW-BAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 50,361, (lated October l0, 1865.
To all whom fit 'may concern: V
Be it known that I, HENRY JEFFREY, ot' Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Device for Drawing Spikes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part- Of this specification, in which- Figure l is an edge view of my invention; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, side views of the saine; Fig. 5, a detached plan or top view ot' a plate pertaining to the same; Fig'. 6, a detached view ot' a lever pertaining to the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for drawing spikes and bolts, and is designed for general use, having for its object the drawing ofthe spikes or bolts without bending them, so that they maybe used again after being drawn.
The within description refers to the in vention being used for drawing railroadspikes.
A represents a semicircular frame or shoe, which may be termed a movable or rolling fulcrutn,77 having on its upper or straight side, a, aplate, B, provided with a steady pin or bolt, I), which tits into the side u. Each end of this plate B has a notch, c, made in it, and these notches are in line with grooves d, made in the ends of the semicircular fulcrum A, said notches and grooves forming claws to catch under the head of the spike or bolt to be drawn. This plate may be dispensed with, the ends ot' A serving alone as claws; but the plate B is preferable.
C represents a handle or lever, which is attached to the semicircular fulcrnm A by means of two short bars, D D, which are secured at one end to opposite sides ot' the lever O by a bolt, e, said bars extendin g down, one at each side of A, and having holes made in them,
through which a key,E,is driven, to clamp the lever firmly to the fulcrnnn A, the key E being driven between the under or inner surta-ce ot' a and a plate,f, fitted in the bars.
The handle or lever O may be secured to the t'ulcrum A in two different positions, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, at right angles with the straightside a., as shown in Fig. 2, and parallel with said side, as shown in Fig. 3. When the lever is adjusted as shown in Fig. l the device is used for drawing spikes at the outer side of the track, the lever O being raised from a horizontal toward a vertical position. When adjusted as shown in Fig. 8 the device is used for drawing spikes inside the track, the lever being forced down from a vertical to a horizontal position, the operator in both cases standing within the track on bridges or trestles of any kind.
The lever O' (shown in Fig. 4) has a beveled lower end, which gives it an inclined position when secured to the fulcrum. This may be used as an independent pinch-bar when there is no bridge or trestle, and for general work when attached to A.
The plate B may, it' worn by use or injured inv any way, be replaced by a new one at any time.
The device is not liable to get out of repair, and possesses the advantage ot' drawing spikes without bending or injuring them, and by llaving duplicates of the parts there will be no necessity ot' sending the device to a shop tor repairs in case ot' breakage.
I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The semicircular rolling` fulcrum A, in connection with the handle or lever O, and hinged bars D, and either with or without the plate B, all arranged substantially as and t'or the purpose speciiied.
HENRY JEFFREY.
