Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.'
EDWARD A. CAMPBELL, OF NVILLIAMS BRIDGE, NEI/V YORK.
SASH-SUPPORTER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,339., dated October 10, 1865.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it knownA that I, EDWARD A. CAMPBELL, of WilliamsBridge,in the countyot'Westchester and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, acertain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention; reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specitcation, wherein- Figure 1 is a section representing part ot' the sashes, with the supporters or locks in place; and Fig. 2 is a plan of said supporters in place in the window-casing.
The same parts are referred to by like letters.
Sash-supporters have heretofore been made as a swinging clamp, having a projection taking against both the outer and inner sides of the sash, near the edge thereof; but this device cannot be applied without cutting a cavity into the molding or strip at the side of the easing, as well as cutting a cavity into the easing. This renders it difficult to remove the molding from the casing if the sash has to be taken out, and also requires much more work and fitting when applied; and the lock or supporter to the upper and outer sash cannot be reached, except by placing the linger in the groove above the lower and inner sash, much to the inconvenience of parties raising or lowering the sashes.
The nature of my said invention consists in a hooked lever let into the window-casing so that the hook acts against the outer face of the sash to draw it toward and hind it against the molding, and the end of the -lever passes behind the molding and projects so as to be easily moved when the sash is to be lowered. A similar lever operates upon the upper and outer sash, and by this construction the fastenings can be applied to the casing before the molding is put on, and do not interfere with the insertion or removal of said molding.
In the drawings, a represents the Windowcasing, b the lower and inner sash, c the outer and upper sash. d is my lever sash-supporter for the lower sash, set on the fulcrum e and let in iush with the face of the casing. fis the hooked end, and gis the thumb-piece or projecting end,ot` the lever. 7i is the molding securing the sash in place.
It will now be seen that as the sash is raised the hooked endfis against the outer face of the sash, near the edge, and when the sash is sustained by the hook it is, in consequence of the said hook drawing the sash toward the molding h as the lever swings downward and inwardby the friction and weight of the sash, against the hooked endf.
The supporter for the outer and upper sash is made in the same manner, and acts to draw it toward the intermediate molding, t'. In this supporter d',j" is the hook, e the fulcruin, and g the thumb-piece, and the operation is as before mentioned. rIhe thumb-pieces g g are in a position easily accessible, and my silipporter is very simple, cheap, and easily app ied.
'What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sash-supporter formed with a hooked end to act against the outside ofthe sash, and
with a thumb-piece or projecting end to be letinto the window-casing and protrude therefrom, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness wliereofI have hereunto set my signature this 19th day of August, A. D. 1865.
E. A. CAMPBELL.
