' will? Patented Aug.I 15, 1893. 6L
@Mim- UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE CHESTER F. FOWLER, OF ST. HELEN, OREGON.
GAGE FOR SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,281, dated August l5, 1893. Application iiled November 26, 1892. Serial No. 453,209. (No model.)
To all whom t mag/concern.'
Be it known that I, CHESTER F. FowLEE, of St. Helen, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages for Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gages for saws designed for its simplicity and durability of construct-ion and efficiency of operation.
A further object of my invention is to supply a gage bynieans of which an even and uniform swagin g of a cross cut saw is possible.
My invention more particularly resides in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fuliydescribed and set forth in the claims.
There are various forms which this device may take onand still be within the spirit of my invention, and I do not desire to coniine myself to the exact construction and location of parts herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through line :zz- Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section through line y-y Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan View.
A is the main frame of the gage, the upper portion of which carries the adjustable slide l5, which is capable of lateral as well as vertical adjustment, the former being accomplished by the screw C, which passes through the slotD in B and is guided in its lateral adjustment by the nut E, which slides in the slot F. The vertical adjustment is accomplished by means of the set screw G, the base of which rests on the shoulder II.
At the end of the frame A is pivoted by means of the screw or bolt I the piece J, from the upper portion of which extends the index or needle K. To prevent the upper portion of the pivoted piece .I from swinging outward from the frame A, I have supplied a screw L, which passes through the slot M in the frame A, shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and is secured to J by means of bolt I.
O shown in Fig. 4, is a handle by means of which the gage can beheld firmly against the saw.
In Fig. 1,1 have shown myinvention in the position employed in gaging the clearing teeth p of the cross cut saw P. It will be readily seen that when the clearing teeth have been swaged the required amount, the index K'will point to the notch Q on the frame A. No matter what the circle or curve of the saw may be, my gage can be readily adjusted by means of the plate B.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts of my gage being thus made known, the operation and the advantages of the same will, it is thought, be readily understood.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a gage for saws, the combination of a frame, a plate pivoted to said frame, and a secondary piece adjustable on said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a gage for saws, the combination of a frame, a plate pivoted to said frame, a secondary piece adjustable on said frame, said former plate carrying an iudex, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a gage for saws, the combination of a frame, a plate pivoted to said frame, a secondary piece adjustable on said frame, and a handle secured to said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHESTER F. FOVLER.
