"-No..50'1,452. PatentdJuly 11', 1893'.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT WHITE, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK TAYLOR, OF SAME PLACE.
COAT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,452, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed March 26, 1890.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hat and Coat Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat and coat hooks and consists in such a hook constructed as hereinafter described, from a single wire, the construction being such as to combine economy of labor and materials required in producing the same, and to secure a hook of great strength and durability.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my improved hat and coat hook.
The hat and coat hook herein described is formed from a single piece of wire A, and has a screw-threaded point a, at one end of the wire, in the usual manner, to enable said hook to be secured to a wall, cleat or other support, and near the other end of said wire has a loop a which surrounds the portion of the wire near said point a. A part of said wire is formed into an upper hook I-I, having a horizontal shank-wire a and, beyond said shank-wire, a laterally bent loop a which is curved upward, as shown, and has a considerable lateral extension to form a broad bearing for garments supported thereon. From the loop a the wire is carried back, at a for a distance, parallel With the shank a and in the same plane, and is then bent downward at an angle, at a to form an inclined strut or brace 13, to connect the upper hook H and the lower hook H. At the lower end of the brace From said loop Serial No. 345,351. (No model.)
a the wire is bent backward to the lower end of said brace B and then vertically upward to the loop a, to form arest or back a which bears against the wall or other support of the hook. The lower hook H is double or formed of two portions of wire from the lower end of the brace B outward and the upper hook H is double or formed of two portions of wire from the upper end of said brace to the end of said hook, and the back a of the hook is also double, the unthreaded end portion of the wire being preferably continued downward from the loop a to the lower end of the brace-wire B. Both members of the same hook H H lie in the same surface laterally, that is, a line connecting two points, one in each member of the same hook, at equal distances from the free end of said hook will be a horizontal line.
I claim as my invention- A hook formed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is formed into an attachingpoint, said wire being doubled upon itself with an upwardly deflected loop to form a hat hook, the two members of which are in the same surface laterally, said wire from the rear end of one of said members being extended diagonally downward and then doubled upon itself and curved to form a coat hook, the two members of which are in the same surface laterally, said wire from the end of one of said last-named members being extended vertically and around the shank of one member of said hat hook, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, this 28th day of February, A. D1890.
