ADJUSTABLE FIREMANS LADDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,403, dated July 11, 1893.

Be it known that I, RICHARD BRAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pompier-Ladder Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fire ladders, especially that type generally designated as adj ustable Pompier ladder hooks, and the object of my invention is to improve the prior construction, and provide novel means whereby the ladder can be folded into a small compass when not in use, and unfolded and secured when desired for use. To accomplish this object my invention involves the features of construction or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the upper end of the tire ladder with the hook open and secured in its open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the hook folded against the ladder. Fig. 3 is also a side elevation with the hook folded showing the hook from the back side; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line X-X of Fig. l.

A. represents a part of the ladder which is provided lwith rungs or steps H-H. This part A. is usually constructed of wood, although any suitable materialmay be used. When wood is used I provide a ferrule, shown by D; instead of the ferrule, two plates may be used, one at either side of the ladder A. This ferrule is securely attached to the upper end of the ladder and at the inner or upper end of the ferrule the hook B is attachedvby means of a pivot or bolt F, which bolt may be held in position by a nut or by any suitable means. The hook B as is shown, may be made of suitable length, and has a sharp pointed hook at G5, and also is provided preferably with projections or hooks shown by G G2, &c. The hook B turns freely upon the bolt F, or if preferred, the bolt F may be rigid with the hook and turned in its bearings. The hopk B also has a backward projection terminating vin the part shown by E. This projection forms a stop limiting the movement of the hook when opened, as shown. A'clevis or pointed loop C is attached to the ferrule by means of a bolt or rivet in such a manner that C maybe turned down from the position shown in Fig. l, to the position shown in Fig. 2. When the hook B, is opened, the loop C .is raised, passing `overthe part E of the hook B, thereby securing the hook in its extended or opened position. In order to secure the loop C in its position upon the part E, I prefer to use a thumb screw I, which engages with a screw thread in C, and also, preferably with a slight depression in E. The

position of the loop C, the part E, and the thumb screw, with the hook B, fastened in its extended position, is fully shown in Fig. 4.

I have referred to the hook B as shutting down against the ladder A. It will be evident that it is not necessary that the hook when folded should rest against the ladder A, but I prefer to have it do so, for the reason that it will be more securely retained in its folded position.

I have shown my preferred form of hook attachment and ladder, but itwill be evident that the form of the hook, ladder or attachment may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In the combination of a ladder, a ferrule or plate attached thereto, a folding hook pivoted to said ferrule, and adapted to fold when not in use, a loop or clevis adapted to retain the hook in its unfolded position, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a ladder, a folding hook pivoted thereto, a clevis also pivoted to said ladder, and a thu mb screw, said clevis and thumb screw adapted to retain the hook unfolded, substantially as described.
