SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,067, dated July 11, 1893.

Be it known that I, CHARLES R. HARRIS, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender- Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in suspender buckles, the object being to provide a buckle particularly adapted for use upon suspender straps of different thicknesses which will adjust itself when clamped to one strap as well as to another whereby a secure fastening is always effected.

A further object is to provide a buckle having an extended surface which may be used for ornamentation to give the buckle a neat and attractive appearance.

With these objects in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view in front elevation of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center of the buckle. Fig. 4: is a detached view of the improved clamping lever.

' A represents the clamping lever which constitutes a leading feature of my present invention. This lever preferably comprises two parts namely a wire and a thin metal plate secured to the wire in such a manner that the two parts are to all intents and purposes a single device. The wire is bent in the middle to form a handle 1 by which the lever is operated. This handle may be in the form of a loop as shown or differently constructed if preferred. From this central point the two parts of the wire are bent together to form the shank 2 and thence they extend 0utwardly in opposite directions and approximately at right angles to the shank and handle as shown at 3, 3. 4, 4, may be formed by a simple U-shaped bend in the wire or they might be made by means of a spiralturn in the wire, the main idea being to form a stiffspring in the lever at this point, and the stiffness of this spring could be varied more or less by varying the length of the springs.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
