ANNA B. S. PHILLIPS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF SALINA, KANSAS.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,609, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed March 21, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNA B. S. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Salina and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in abdominal supporters for the use of females; and the object of the invention is to produce an abdominal supporter to be Worn next to the person, and which is made of one single knitted piece, to be drawn over the feet; also to extend the supporter over the entire ab domen, and yet to prevent any undue pressure on any one part, and to exert a much more beneficial effect; also to produce the article, so that it can be readily washed, when soiled, thus obviating the necessity of constantly purchasing new ones; furthermore to arrange the flexible straps, used to secure the article in place, in such manner, that they are prevented from coming in contact with the person, and thereby to prevent the rub bing of the skin, as is the case with other supporters now in use; and finally to produce the necessary firmness or strength in front, by the employment of plain stitch, and producing the article at a very reasonable expense and of any'size desired.
The invention consists in a garment made of a knitted material, of a tubular body of vertically ribbed knitted fabric, extending from the top to the bottom edges thereof, and provided with a central plain knitted fabric in front, to give greater firmness and to extend over the entire abdomen and provided with flexible straps, secured to reinforce or strengthening pieces, to secure the article to the person, and to be drawn up over the feet and so as to accommodate itself to the Waist, the hips and upper parts of the lower limbs, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the Serial No. 467,016, (No model.)
claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the abdominal supporter in position. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, showing the straps and re-inforces, for securing the article.
In the drawings, A, represents the main body of the abdominal supporter, made of woolen, silk jersey, or other suitable material, by knitting it. It is made with the ribs a, as best seen in Fig. 1, so as to accommodate itself to the figure, and it is provided with the central front part B, which is formed of a plain stitch, that will readily accommodate itself to the extra fullness necessary in front, and still have firmness or strength enough to act as a support. To the rear part of the body A are secured the straps O, which are attached to the vertical re-inforce or strengthening pieces D. These straps can be made of tape or other suitable flexible material, and are so arranged, that they will not come in contact with any part of the skin.
The distinctive feature of this supporter is its circular shape, and its simplicity of construction, rendering it pliant, light, and easily conformable to the body; making the use of whale-bones and the complicated straps usually required unnecessary; another important feature being, that it can be Washed, and it is therefore cheap.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. An abdominal supporter consisting of a tubular body of vertically ribbed knitted fabric, the said ribs extending from the top to the bottom edges thereof, the front of said body being formed of plain knitted fabric, as set forth.
2. An abdominal supporter consisting of a tubular body of ribbed knitted fabric, having a plain knitted front portion and having at the back vertical reinforcing tapes and hori zontal adjusting straps, connecting said tapes as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANNA B. S. PHILLIPS.
