Description

TODD & VANDEREAR.
Car Brake.
No. 50,051. Patented Sept. 19. 1865.
Witnesses: inventbr: M/%@ 75W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO WILLIAM W. TODD AND JOHN VANDEROAR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,051, dated September 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. Tom) and JOHN VANDERCAR, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a novel and useful Improvement in Railroad-Gar Brakes; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
' and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
In order that the public may fully understand the nature of our invention, and those who are skilled in the manufacture thereof be enabled to construct the same, we will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure 1 is a perspective drawing of the top of a railroad-oar, showing the foot-lever 1 with spring or other suitable catch, a, which holds the lever 1 down by means of notches or otherwise. Fig. 2 is a perspective drawing of the under side of a railroad-car, showing the segmental cogged plate A A, levers 1, 2, 3, and 4, by which means the rubbers or shoes 8 s are brought and held in contact with the carwheels by simply placing the foot upon the lever 1.
The moment the foot is removed the reaction of the gear relieves the wheels unless prevented by the spring-catch n or some other suitable device.
\Ve are aware that cogwvheels with endless chain and other attachments have been used for such purposes; but the arrangement and use of the segmental cogged plates AA with levers 1, 2, 3, and 4, arranged so as to operate at either or both ends of the car, if necessary, at the same time upon all four of the wheels, we believe to be new and useful. Therefore,
What we claim as noveland useful, and what we wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
The segmental cogged plates A A, operated by the foot at either or both ends of the car at the same time by means of levers l 2 3 4, arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. W. TODD. JOHN VANDEROAR.
