SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,498, dated May 2, 1893.

. To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WALKER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation toimprovements in Vises and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts as more particularly set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

My invention has for its object to simplify devices of this character by entirely dispensing with screw-threads generally employed for the purpose of adjusting the movable jaw of the vise, and it consists of a stationary part forming one jaw, a movable member 1 forming the opposite jaw, teeth formed on the said movable member providing a gripping surface, a movable block susceptible of both vertical and longitudinal adjustment, a cam for moving said block in one direction, and suitable surfaces formed on the lower surface of the movable block and the bottom of the cavity formed in the stationary part of the vise for elevating the block and causing the same to engage with the movablemember- Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary member of the vise having a jaw 2 of the usual construction, the lower portion or bottom of said member being flanged through which flange bolts are passed for securing the same.
3 represents a cavity which is formed in the stationary member of the vise, and formed in the opposite sides of the cavity, and on aline with the top of the same are two grooves 4 which are adapted to receive the opposite flanges 5 formed on the sides of the extension 6 of the movable member 7. The said mov- Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sec which are adapted to receive the teeth 9 formed on the upper surface of the movableblock 10 when the said block is elevated by the means hereinafter described. The said movable block 10 is located within the cavity 3 and below the extension 6 of the movable member, and when the same is in its normal position the teeth formed thereon are out of contact with the teeth 8 of the movable memanother, which surfaces move upon the flat 3 surfaces 12 after the said block has been elevated and moved longitudinally for adjusting the movable member of the vise. In order to release the block from its engagement with the movable member, depressions 13 are formed in the bottom of the cavity 3 which are adapted to receive the surfaces 11 of the block 10 thus allowing the said block to fall out of contact with the movable member. When the block is in its normal position or out of contact with the movable member, the inclined surfaces 14 formed on the bottom of the cavity 3 engaging with the inclined surfaces 15 formed on the block 10 cause thesaid block to be elevated as shown in Fig. 1 when power is applied to the forward end of said block.
Pivoted to the stationary member 1 of the vise, and below the movable member thereof is a cam lever 16 the engaging surface of which is brought in contact with the forward end of the block 10 when itis desired to move the movable member,first elevatingthe block diagonally upward causing the teeth formed thereon to come into engagement with the teeth formed on the movable member, and after said engagement the said movable member is carried longitudinally with the block by further application of power on the cam. When it is desired to release the movable member, the cam lever 16 is thrown into position as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1 and thus the engaging surface of the cam is moved out of contact with the block 10, allowing the movable member to be freely moved by the hand which causes the block to be moved along with said member until the surfaces 11 of the block come opposite the depressions 13 when the block will drop as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, allowing the movable member to be adjusted to any position.
From the foregoing description the operation of the vise is obvious.
17 is a coiled spring interposed between one end of the block and the vertical wall 18 of the cavity 3 which assists the movable member in its outward movement when the cam lever is released.
Having particularly described my in vention, what I claim isl. A vise comprising a stationary and a movable member, teeth formed on the movable member, a block movably located within the stationary member, teeth formed on said block, and means for first elevating said block to bring it into engagement with the movable member, and afterward moving the same in a longitudinal direction, substantially as set forth.
2. A Vise comprising a stationary and movable member, teeth formed on the movable member, a cavity formed in the stationary member, a movable block located within said cavityprovicled with teeth, flat and inclined surfaces formed on the bottom of the block, depressions and inclined surfaces formed on the bottom of said cavity, and a cam lever for moving said block in one direction after the same has been elevated and brought into ongagement with the movable member, substantially as set forth.
3. A vise consisting of a stationary member, provided with a cavity 3, grooves 41: formed in the sides of the same, a movable member 7 having an extension 6, flanges 5 formed on the said extension and received by the said groove, teeth 8 formed on the lower surface of the said extension, ablock 10 provided with teeth 9, flat and inclined surfaces 11 and 15 formed on the bottom of said block, depressions 13 formed in the bottom of said cavity having inclined surfaces 14, and a cam lever 16 pivoted to the stationary member and below the movable member for engaging the block and operating the movable member, substantially as set forth.
4. A vise comprising a stationary and a movable member, teeth formed on the movable member, a block movably located Within the stationary member, teeth formed on said block, means for first elevating said block to bring it into engagement with the movable member and afterward moving the same longitudinally in one direction, and aspring for moving the same longitudinally in a reverse direction, substantially as set forth.
