OSCAR F. WESTENHISER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO IRVING L. KEITH, OF HAVERHILL, MASSAGHUSETT$Q SOLE-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1915.
Application filed Indy 5, 1913. Serial No. 777,410.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR F. WESTEN- rnsnn, a citizen of the United States, re siding at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Sole- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements inmeans for cementing taps to soles, and more particularly to an improvement in sole-holders of the type shown in the patent to Brittain, #1916544. When using the device of said prior patent, it is necessary to place the holder, with the stack of soles thereon, in a press, so that the cemented sur faces will be firmly pressed together and be caused to adhere. This usually involves the transference of the loaded holders from the place where they are filled, to the press, and, as a number of holders, each having a stack of soles thereon, are usually placed in a stack in the press, and as there is usually some delay in applying the pressure, it frequently happens that the cement becomes set before the heavy pressure of the press is applied, so that the sole and taps are not cemented together throughout their entire surfaces. It is, therefore, desirable, for these and various other reasons, to apply the equivalent of the pressure of a large press to the cemented soles, as soon as possible after the cement has been applied.
The object of my invention is to produce a sole-holding device in which a stack of a dozen or more soles may be placed, and to provide said device with means whereby the soles may be placed under a heavy pressure as soon as they have been piled, so that the use of a large press will be avoided, and to provide a device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, which may be conveniently handled, and in which the soles may be readily stacked, and from which they may be readily removed after the cement has set.
I accomplish these objects by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a soleholding and pressing device made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views showing the locking devices in different positions.
As shown in the drawing, 1 provide a base-block or plate a, which is similar in form to the base-block disclosed in said patent to Brittain, in that it has its end portions upwardly curved or raised for the same purpose as that disclosed in said patent.
According to my invention I provide a pair of metal tubes, which constitute tubular guideways, said tubes being connected by a cross-bar 2'), the latter being secured to the under side of the base-block a, in the middle thereof, as best shown in Fig. 2-, and said tubes 6 being arranged approximately midway of the base-block a, and extending vertically with relation thereto for a distance preferably somewhat more than half the height of a stack of soles, such as are usually placed at one time in devices of this char acter. A presser-block c is also provided, which simply consists of a flat piece of heavy board of the same dimensions, as, and of similar character to the block a, and having flat surfaces both top and bottom. I also provide a il-shaped rod Z, which is arranged astride the block a midway thereof, the side portions (5 of said rod being adapted to slide in the tubes 6, and a cylindrically shaped head e having a handle 6' thereon, is pivoted on the intermediate portion (Z of said rod, at a point somewhat eccentric of the center of the head, forming a cam-lever. A pair of pawls f are pivotally mounted on the tubes 6 adjacent the upper ends thereof, in position to engage a series of ratchet teeth (Z on the side portions (5. The end portions 7 on said pawls are preferably weighted, and said pawls are normally held so that the engaging ends thereof extend downwardly in position to engage the ratchet teeth d when the portions 03 are inserted in tubes 72, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Said head e is also loosely connected to the pressure block by means of a pair of vertically slotted ears h, mounted on said plate and through which the intermediate portion d of the rod (2 passes.
The manner in which the device is employed is as follows: "While the soles are piled on the base plate, the pressure plate is entirely removed or disconnected therefrom, and the tubes 6 serve as supports for the sides of the stack. The soles and skived taps are stacked on each end of the baseblock a, in the manner described in said patent to Brittain, and when a suitable number have been stacked thereon the ratchet rods d are passed into the guiding tubes 1) and the pressure block a is pressed down by hand, as far as it may be conveniently, and when the hand pressure is removed, the pawls will engage the ratchets (Z so that the block a will be held approximately in this position. This is done While the lever e is in the full line position of Figs. 1 and 3. This lever is then thrown over to the dotted line position of Fig. 1, so that it acts as a cam, causing the block 0 to be forced down and the stack of soles to be pressed firmly onto the base block a,
this force being resisted by the pawl and ratchet connection between the lever and the block a, and the parts being arranged so that the more eccentric portion of the head 6 will pass across and beyond a per pendicular line from the center of the rod portion 03 to the surface of the block a, z. 6., across the dead center point, so that, when the handle a engages said block, and thus limits its further movement, the full pressure which can be applied. will have been applied and the tendency of the soles to expand will tend to draw the lever arm 6 against the block 0, causing the parts to remain in this position as long as desired.
When the soles have been held under pressure until the cement is set, the Whole device is inverted and the eccentric lever is then thrown back to the original position. By inverting the device the weights 7" on the pawls Will cause them to be moved out of engagement with the ratchet teeth Y member being provided with transverse corrugations, a dog mounted on each arm of the opposite member for engaging the corrugations with a given position of the assembled members, and a Weighted lever-arm leading from said dog for rocking the dog out of engagement with said corrugations upon an inversion of the assembled members.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
