MINING-CAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,114, dated June 27, 1893.

Application filed October 28, 1892. Serial No. 450,222. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

. Be it known that We, HAMLET CORRIGAN and HARDMAN E. FULKERSON, citizens of the United States, residing-at Smiths Mills, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining-Oars; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The special object of the invention is to make the end-gate of a car open automatically as it comes to its place on the tipple.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation, showing the car tilted on the tipple so as to discharge its coal, ore or other contents; Fig. 2 a detail view, showing the latch lever just before it goes under the incline, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of car taken vertically through the middle of car.

In the drawings, A represents the ordinary tipple with the tongue (1 which passes between the body and axles, while its headblock a forms the stop which prevents the car from running off. At one side of the headblock a, I erect a post B and near the top, on the inside, I fasten the block 0 having the subjacent incline c.

D represents an ordinary mining car with the end-gate d hinged or pivoted at the top and swinging out from the bottom, when it is unfastened and has been tilted on the tipple, the latter being transversely jointed at a so that the weight of the car will cause the section a to tilt while the section a remains in a horizontal plane. The two sections a a are connected on top by a chain E which has length enough to allow section a to be turned at the desired angle to the section 8 while at the bottom, they are connected by a'longitudinal board F, to one end of which the section a is hinged. On the outside of the endgate, I fulcrum a latch lever G Whose rear end 9 extends beyond the car so as to be depressed by the incline c on the postblock.

II is a chain fastened at one end to the bottom of the car and provided at the other with a. link h which passes through the endgate hole d and is held by the latch end g which passes through it. This holds the door securely until the latch has been lifted by the incline c on the postblock of the tipple.

What we claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is 6 In a mining car, the chain I-I having an endlink hand fastened at the other end to the bottom of the car, an end-gate having a hole d through which the link extends, and a lever G fulcrumed on the gate with a latch at one end and with the other end g extending beyond the side of car, in combination with a block 0 inclined 011 the under side and made fast to a tipple post as shown and described.
