G. D. WRIGHT.
- VEHICLE TONGUE.
'APPLIOATION FILED DEO.9.1907.

VEHICLE-TONGUE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 1a, 1908.
W Application filed December.9, 1907.- Serial No,
Be it known that I, 'CLARKD. VVRIGHT', citizen of the United States, residing at Pal- To all whom 'it 'may concern:
estine, in the county of Crawford and State oflllinois, have invented certam'new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
The present invent-ion relates in general to vehicles, and more particularly to asectional tongue having a novel format-ion whichper mits grain tobe unloaded at the elevatorwithout the necessity offiunhitching of unsnappin the breast chains or check lines.
The. 0 ject of the invention is to design a tongue of this character-which is stro'n and durable in its construction and whic enables the driver to retain complete control over his team. a
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the, result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a tongue embodying the. invention, the tongue sections being shown as locked in alinement with each other. Fig 2. is a similar view on an enlarged scale showlngfthe locking memberas swung upwardly in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the tongue'sections swung atv an angle to each other. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a portion of the tongue. Fig. 5 is'an enlarged detail view of the hinge plates, portions being broken away.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. 1
The invention contemplates a vehicle tongue formed in hinged sections which are normally held in alinement with each other by means of a novel lockin mechanism.
Referring to the draw1ngs,-the-numerals 1 and 2 designate the sections of the tongue through the tongue. v In the'present instanceand these slots are normall it will be observed that three of these bolts are utilized in connection with each of the plates 6,.one bolt being located at the outer end of each of the plates'while a pair of' bolts in transverse. alinement with each other are disposed toward the inner end of each plate. The abutting edges of the plates 6 have the longitudinal slots 8 formed therein in alinement with each other. It will a so be observed that the portions of the tongue sections im- 'medi ately under the slots 8 are recessed to receive a'swinging locking bar 9. The lower corners of the locking bar are rounded or beveled and one end of the bar is pivotally mountediup'on a bolt 10 passing transversely through the recess in the ton c section 1, while theopposite end of the ocking bar is notched as indicated at 11 and is designed to engage a pin or bolt 12 passing transversely through the recess in the tongue section 2. Attention is directed to the fact that V in rear of a pairof vertical bolts 7 and are therefore prevented from pulling I through the tongue sections should an excessive pull be exerted upon thetongue. The swinging end of the locking bar carries aneye 13 for engagement with a cord or like member which extends tothe dash-board.
In the operation of the device a slight pull upon the cord serves to raise the locking bar 9 to an" upright position whereupon the wagon tongue drops down as far as the breast chains 1 will permit, usually within about twenty inches of the floor. When the wagon is' dumped the stub tongue rises up with the wagon, clearing the check lines and leaving the tongue between'the horses to keep them' apart. After the wagon has been unloaded the horses are started forward and the breast chains caused. to tighten and.
vided with corresponding recesses and one of the recesses having'a pin passing transversely across the same, and a locking bar pivotally mounted within the opposite rethrough each of cess and adapted to have an interlocking connection with the pin extending across the first mentioned recess.
2flhe combination of a tongue formed in hinged sections,
the sections, it locking meniher piuotally mounted upon one of the pins and adapted to engage the opposite pin to hold the two sections in elinenient with each other, and :1 second pin passing transversely through each of the tongue sections innuediately in front of the first mentioned pin and arranged transversely with respect thereto so as to reinforce the same and prevent it from pulling out through the end of the tongue section.
a pin passing transversely..-
The combination of a tongue formed in sections pivotally connected hinge plates secured to one side of the sections, plates sccured to the opposite side of the tongue sections and provided ivith slots, the said slots being in :ilincment with each other and the portions of the tongue sections under the slots being recessed, lllh'l a swinging locking member pivotally mounted within the recess of one of the tongue sections and adapted to be received within the recess of the opposite tongue section nection with the said opposite tongue section.
