SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 728,207, dated May 19, 1903. Application filed August 15, 1902. Serial No. 119.733. N0 mod l- Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve'mentsin Dumping-Wagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates particularly to dumping-wagons of the four-wheel type; and it consists in the novel construction of the wagon and in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, as
will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved wagon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
In the drawings thus briefly described the reference-letters A and B designate, respectively, the front and rear axles, provided with wheels 0.
D is a bolster upon the front axle, and E is a reach member secured to the bolster and having a pivotal connection with the wagon body, as hereinafter setforthr F represents the body of the wagon, which is fulcrumed upon the rear axle for vertical tipping movement, while the front portion or end of the body is adapted to rest upon the bolster and is detachably secured thereto by a suitable lock, preferably ahook G and eye H.
I is the usual tail-board closing the rear end of the body and attached to it by bars J, pivoted, as shown, to the sides K of the body at points designated by the reference-letter L.
The reach previously referred to comprises two members or bars a and 1), preferably rigidly secured at their front ends to the bolster and pivotally connected at their rear ends to hangers c. As shown, these hangers are at the rear of the body-fulcrum and project below the rear axle a considerable distance, so that the line of draft willibe applied to the body at a point considerably below the rear axle.
M designates levers pivoted upon each side of the body.
0 designates links connecting the forward I end of the lever to the reach in the manner indicated in Fig. 2, and Pdesignates similar links connecting the rear ends of the levers with the bars J.
The body, as shown, has a discharge-opening Q formed in the bottom or floor thereof in its forward portion. This openingis closed when the body is in a horizontal position by r a closure R in the form of a tilting section pivoted to the reach member to swing between the bars a and b. The tilting section is of sufficient area to overlap the portions of the flooring of the body adjoining the opening and is adapted to be held in operative relation to the body-opening by the weight of the body, as shown in Fig. 1. A pivot-bar T is preferably employed to connect the tilting section to the reach. This bar'is preferably rigidly attached to the section and journaled in suitable bearings 01 in the under side of the reach. It is also arranged at one side of the center of the closure, so that when the weight of the body is removed therefrom the section will automatically assume a vertical tilted position.
When it is desired to dump the contents of the wagon, the front-portion of the body is disconnected from the front axle, and the draft is applied to the latter through the draftpole U. A pull is then exerted through the medium of the reach upon the hangers c, which cause the body to rock or tilt upon the axle B. As soon as the bodyis raised the closure tilts automatically, allowing the contents of the front portion of the wagon to be dumped through the opening Q. Simultaneously with the rocking or tilting of the body the tail-board I is raised through the medium of the operating connection between it and the reach, allowing the balance of the wagon contents to be discharged at the rear of the body.
In restoring the parts of the wagon to their normal position the body is drawn downwardly into a horizontal position, the tailboard is closed against the rear end of the body, and the tilting section Ris forced by the body into a horizontal position to close the discharge opening. In order that the tilting section may be properly operated by the body, its tilting movement is limited by suitable means, preferably a cable V, extending from one end of the section to the front axle.
It will be apparent from the construction of the wagon that by applying the draft to the body at a point below the rear axle the tilting of the wagon-body upon its fulcrum may be more readily effected. Also by discharging the portion of the wagon contents through the opening in the forward part of the body less power is required in effecting the dumping and the discharge of the wagon contents is expedited.
That we claim as our invention is-- 1. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the wheeled axles, of the body fulcrumed upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement and provided with a discharge-opening in the floor thereof in advance of the fulcrum, and a tilting section normally closing the discharge-opening and adapted to automatically tip into an inclined position upon the rocking of the body.
.3. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the wheeled axles, of the body fulcrumed upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement and provided with a discharge-opening in the floor thereof in advance of the fulcrum, and a tilting cover-section mounted in bearings independent of the body and held normally in operative relation to the opening by the body.
3. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the wheeled axles, of the body fulcru med upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement and provided with a discharge-opening in the floor thereof in advance of the fulcrum, a reach secured to the front axle and having a pivotal connection with the body, and a tilting cover-section for said discharge-open- "manor ing pivoted at one side of its center to the reach in operative relation to the opening.
4. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the wheeled axles, of the body fulcrn med upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement and provided with a discharge-opening in the floorthereofin advance of thefulcrum, a reach secured to the front axle and having a pivotal connection with the body, a tilting cover-section for said discharge-opening pivoted at one side of its center to the reach in operative relation to the opening, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the pivoted section.
5. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the front and rear axles, of the body fulcrn med upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement. and detachably connected to the front axle, a tail-board closing the rear end of the body, a reach member secured to the front axle and having a pivotal connection with the body and an operative connection between the reach and the tail-board whereby upon the rocking of the body the tail-board will be simultaneously operated.
6. In a dumping-wagon, the combination with the front and rear axles, of the body detachably secured to the front axle and fulcrumed upon the rear axle for vertical rocking movement, hangers depending from the body in proximity to but rearwardly of the fulcrum, and a reach member secured to the front axle and pivotally connected to the hangers.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
