To all whom it mag/concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. NASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in folding chairs, and particularly to that class of such chairs which are employed by physicians, dentists, &c., for treating patients, and the object of my invention is to provide a chair of this character which shall be inexpensive in construction, simple in operation and which'when folded, shall be of small size and convenient for transportation, all as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

The novel features of myinvention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In order that my improvements may be the better understood I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a chair constructed according to my invention, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a general perspective view, representing the chair set up, ready for use, and Fig. 2, is a similar view, representing it closed or folded up. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation and Fig. 4. a rear elevation of the head rest, showing the details of construction thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the foot rest detached and in its folded position.

In the views, A, A, A, A, represent the folding legs which are connected in pairs by rounds a, a, a,'ct', at top and bottom respectively, and these pairs are pivoted together at a". Pivoted 0n the upper round of the legs A, A, are two long side bars B, B, each provided on its under side with a series of recesses or transverse grooves 12, which when the chair is set up for use take over the upper round a, of the pair of legs A, and prevent their being forced apart by the weight of the body upon the chair. effected by drawing the legs nearer together or spreading them farther apart.

The side bars are connected together at about the center of their length by a trans verse round 1), upon which are pivoted at each side, the uprights O, O, of the chair back, which are likewise connected and braced by a round 0, near their lower ends, and a cross piece a, at their upper ends. Pivoted on the respective side bars B, in front of the round I), and about midway between the same and the pivot points, are'the arm supports D, D, to the upper end of each of which is secured a stout strap E, passing down and having a buckle e at one end forming a loop therein which takes about the round a, of the legs A. The other end of said strap is provided with a hook e, which engages an eye 0*, set in each of the uprights O, 0, about midway of the length thereof. Thus it will be seen that said straps act as braces for the back of the chair and for the arm supports D, D, and at the same time take the place of the rigid arms commonly employed in such chairs. By means of the buckle e, a certain degree of adj ustability is also afforded for the inclination of the back, the loop at the end of each strap being lengthened or shortened in order to increase or decrease such inclination.

Secured to the cross piece 0, of the chair back is a clamping plate F, through which passes the support G, to which the head rest 9 is hinged at g, and f is a slide block also passing through said plate F, and bearing at its upper end under the rear side h of the head rest g, which is inclined with relation to the front thereof, as clearly seen. Thus it will be seen that when the slide block f is moved up and down in the plate F, its upper end will be pressed more or less far under the inclined rear face h of the head rest 9, whereby the proper adjustment of said rest is socured, after which the parts are firmly locked together by a clamping screw f Pivoted on the lower round a, of the pair of legs A, are two braces J, JFone at each side thereof, the forward ends of which are joined together by a cross piecej and a round j, and K, K, are other shorter legs pivoted within braces J, J, at or near the central porassembled take over the round j, and hold the foot rest securely in position.

The back of the chair and seat thereof will have proper coverings, which I have not deemed it necessary to show in the drawings, as they possess no special novelty. and would obscure the different views.

In folding the chair, the grooved bars B, B, are lifted to free them from the upper round a, and the hooks e are disengaged from the eyes a", allowing the arm supports D to fall forward inside the said side bars B. The back of the chair now falls rearward] y inside the side bars B, as seen in. Fig. 2. The hooks l, of the foot restL, are now disengaged from the round j, and said rest together with the legs K, K, is folded within the braces J, J. The whole is then lifted and turned upon the lower round at, until the folded foot rest lies inside the inner pair of legs A, A. The

two pairs of legs A and A, are now folded together when the device will present something of theappearance seen in Fig. 2.

My invention as herein set forth, possesses V as stated, many advantages of lightness,

cheapness, durability and convenience over the other forms of such chairs,as will be readily seen, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construetion and arrangement shown, as it is obvious that many alterations may be made therein without material departure from the principles V of my invention, as for instance, the side bars B, may be pivoted to theupper round of the rear set of legs A, and their recesses engage the upper round a, and in lieu of the grooves in the side bars B, for locking same to the legs, some other device may be employed. As herein shown, the chair is of very light construction and of very plain appearance, but it is evident itmay be made very ornamental if so desired.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim 1. In a folding chair, the combination of the legs arranged in pairs and pivoted to- "gether atintermediate points,one pair inside of the other, the side bars hinged to the upper end of one of the said pairs inside of the legs and adapted to engage with the upper end of the other pair, the back hinged to the side bars near to the free ends of and between the same, and the mechanism foradjustably holding the said back in position consisting of the upright supports pivoted to the side bars between and near the front ends of the same, and the adjustable straps connecting the front ends of the side bars with the back and passing over the upper ends of the said supports, the several parts being arranged so as to be folded one within the other so as to be substantially in the same plane, as described.

2. In a folding chair, the combination of the legs arranged in pairs and pivoted together at intermediate points, one pairinside of the other, the cross bar connecting the lower ends of the legs forming one ofthe said pairs, the side pieces hinged *on the said cross bariuside of the said legs, the cross bar connecting the free ends of the said side pieces, the supports pivoted to the inner faces of the side pieces, the foot rest removably hinged to the cross bar connecting the free ends of the side pieces and pivoted at its rear end between the upper ends of the said supports, the said legs, side piecessup'ports and foot rest being so arranged as to be folded together into substantially the same plane, as described.
