MADISON W. REEVES, OF SAYRE, PENNSYLVANIA.-
DOOR-HOLDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of llietters Patent NO. 500,036, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed September 7, 1892. Serial No. 445,224. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MADISON W. REEVES, of Sayre, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holding Devices; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in door holding devices; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient means for supporting a door, shutter or other similar object on edge while being planed down or while the hinges are being secured thereto.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing its upright portion turned forward so as to grasp a door having a rounded end.
A, represents the base of the device which is supported at each end by a foot B. Near one end of the base and secured to both sides thereof are the upwardly projected plates 0, between which is pivotally secured the upright member D.
E, represents a brace which is inclined downward from the rear side of the said upright to the base upon which its lower end rests.
The said end is secured in the loop of the U- shaped bail F, by means of a staple G, under which the said bail freely turns. The ends of the bail are secured in eyes H, projecting from the base A, and in which they also turn, so that, as shown in Fig. 2, when the upright D, is tilted forward the rear end of the brace will rise from the base, but will be braced all the while by the said bail.
To the upper end of the upright D, is secured the horizontal notched block I, in which the end of the door fits as shown in Fig. 2 so that the door is grasped tightly by the same and prevented from turning to one side or the other.
Secured to the base A, near the lower end of the upright D, are the blocks J, between which the lower edge of the door rests thus holding the same from slipping off the base while being operated upon.
In Fig. 2, the device is represented as 'supporting on edge a door having a rounded end which the block on the upright is grasping. This position of the upright is secured by placing beneath the lower end of the brace E, a block or other device K, which holds the same up and consequently the upright tilted forward.
The device. herein shown and described is most useful in supporting doors and blinds while their edges are being operated upon or while the hinge butts are being applied thereto. It is simple in construction and very simple in operation, yet of great convenience in operating upon objects of the class stated.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The holding device consisting of the hori zontal base, the swinging member at its lower end hinged to said base at a distance from the end thereof and provided with engaging or holding means at its upper end, the brace E inclined downwardly and rearwardly from the upper portion of said swinging member so that the lower free end thereof can rest on said base or on a block thereon, and the bail F loosely secured to said brace a distance above the lower end and loosely secured to the base, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
M. W. REEVES.
