Description

Patented Julie 13, 1893.
WZZJVESSES .zlilomzey UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN BLACK, OF WASHBURN, MISSOURI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,626, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed June 13, 1892. Serial No. 436,607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashburn, in Barry county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Cheese Hoop and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cheese casings, or hoops, and cutters; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cheese casing and cutter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken through the line D D of Fig. 1,1ooking down. Fig. 3 is a detail View.
A designates the base of the casing, to which the top H is connected by suitable bolts or uprights, and between thebase and top are located a wall F and a' door 0, said door sliding in grooves or recesses formed in the base and top. The wall F or that part of the casing which is confined between the top H, and base A by the bolt P is of such a size that when placed in position there will be left a space, which is adapted to be covered by the sliding door 0, which door can be moved to lie over and close the space between the ends of the wall or casing, or he slid to one side to provide an opening through which the piece of cheese cut by the knife can be removed.
M designates a table which is held centrally upon the base A by means of a bushing 0 through which passes a central bolt P. The upper end of this bolt has a suitable thumb piece while its lower end enters a nut J which is let into the under side of the base. The table is provided on its periphery with ratchet teeth R, and on its under side with rollers V.
The bolt P is provided longitudinally with a groove or recess as shown.
Near one side of the casing is secured a bolt or post F, which has attached thereto guide strips E, and between these guides and in the groove in the central post P slides a knife K, said knife being adapted to be reciprocated bythe lever L to which it is connected by a link I, said link passing through an opening in the top of the casing. The lever L is fulcrumed upon a block S, and is provided with a suitable grasping handle.
Near one side of the base of the casing, and adjacent to the post F,is pivoted a lever made up of the parts W and G, which are pivotally connected to each other as shown. The part W of this lever is pivoted to the base and has an upwardly projecting pin T to which is attached a block Q carrying a spring Y, said spring bearing against the ratchet teeth It on the periphery of the table. The lever is operated to turn the table, and the movement of the same is limited in one direction by the post F and in the other by a pin Z attached to the base.
In practice, the cheese is placed centrally upon the table, after the knife is raised and the door 0 slid to one side of the opening. The bolt P is then forced through the cheese and screwed into the nut J; the knife can now be operated to cut the cheese, and by properly manipulating the lever IN the cheese can be turned so that when the knife descends it will cut off a slice of the proper thickness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cheese casing constructed substantially as shown and provided with a sliding door 0, the combination of a table having ratchet teeth on its periphery, and a jointed lever pivoted to the base of the casing and carrying a spring which engages with the ratchet-teeth on the table, the joint in the lever permitting the outer member of the same to be folded within the casing, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined cheese casing and cutter, a rotary table mounted upon a central bolt, said bolt having a longitudinal groove,a post F having guides, a knife-blade K located between the post and central bolt and connected by a link to a lever mounted on the top of the casing, a lever pivoted to the base and provided beyond its fulcrum with a block carrying a spring, which spring engages with the edge of the table, stops for limiting the movement of said lever, and a sliding door 0, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN BLACK.
