To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CALVIN J UDD J ENCKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reedsburg, in the county of Sank and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Snap-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to snap-hooks, and has for its object to provide a safety device of the character set forth that will be preventedfrombecomingaccidentallyunsnapped or opened; and with these and other ends in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a snap-hook embodying the invention, showing a ring in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the snap-hook and ring arranged for disconnecting the latter. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the snap-hook with the ring removed.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the snap-hook, which is bifurcated or slotted longitudinally, as at 2, and the upper walls on opposite sides of the slot or bifurcation are formed with aligned curved slots 3, that open outwardly from the top of said body. The front edges of the walls on opposite sides of the bifurcation or slot are formed with indented recesses 4, that are preferably of segmental form, and at the rear of the body 1 is integrally formed a transversely-extending loop 5. The under rear edge of the body 1, and a part of the under side of the loop 5, are constructed with a groove 6, in which is seated a fiat spring 7 secured in position at its rear end and extending over the lower open side of the body a considerable distance.

A hook 8 has the shank 9 thereof pivotally mounted in the bifurcation or slot of the body 1,.and the curvature of the said hook is such 7 "clai-medas new isthat the contour of the inner engaging surface of the same merges into the recesses t of the body 1 when the said hook is in looking position, as shown in Fig. 1, while the upper free end of the said hook is held between the walls of the bifurcation or slot in advance of the curved slots 3. The under edge of the rear part of the shank 9 is constructed with a shouldered recess lO, with which the front free end of the spring 7 is adapted to engage, to thereby hold the said hook in the position shown in Fig. 1 against accidental movement of the same. The under edge of the free end of the hook 8 is beveled, as at 11, in order to cause the same to stand a considerable distance upward toward the tops of the slots 3, or on a level with the upper terminations of the same when the said free end of the hook is moved across the said slots.

In operation the hook 8 is moved either in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the ring arranged in the slots 3 to release the same by leaving thesaid ring remain in the slots 3 and forcing the hook downward into the position shown in Fig. 1, or while the said hook is in the position shown in Fig. l the ring or other device adapted to be attached to the snap-hook is placed in the slots3 and the hook positioned as shown in Fig. 1, when the ring or other device to be attached is then moved into the hook and the latteragain drawn into the position shown in Fig. 1.

It will be seen that the hook does not dey pend for its operation upon the spring 7, as

the said spring merely acts to sustain the hook in its closed position against too loose movement.

The construction of the device as an entirety is simple, and its action is positive, while an engagement or disengagement relative thereto may be quickly obtained without any appreciable loss of time or expense of labor. 1

Having described the invention, what is In a snap-hook, the combination of a body having a bifurcation or slot therein, the walls at the upper part of the latter being formed with aligned slots that open outwardly from to spring attached thereto that is arranged to bear against the under rear edge of the shank of the hook, substantially as described.
