Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONRAD P. KROLL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,893, dated September 12, 1865.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD P. KRoLL, of No. 262 Eighth avenue, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Brushing and Dressing the Hair, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in arranging around and upon the periphery of a cylindrical drum, placed upon a shaft having suitable handles at each end for holding the same in a persons hands, a series of brushes of any desired stiffness, to which brush-cylinder, by means of au elastic band or belt passing around the same and over a pulley receiving motion through any suitable devices connecting it with the driving power used, a rotary movement is imparted, the elastic band permitting the brush to be freely moved about from place to place or to any desired position without disconnecting it from the driving power. The object of thus arranging a brush upon a shaft susceptible of being held in the hands and connecting it with the driving power used by an elastic band, as described, is to enable the brush, while being so revolved, to be brought to any desired position with regard to a persons head and upon any portion thereof for the brushing and dressing of the hair upon the same.
The advantages in the use of a revolving brush for the hair are many, among which may be mentioned,that the head can be more thoroughly and quickly as well as better cleansed from dandrui than from the use of the ordinary handbrushes,and without injury to the hair or skin.
In the accompanying plate ot' drawings my machine is illustrated, Figure l showing one inode of revolving the brush and the manner in which it is held when applied to the head;
Fig. 2, a sectional view of the brush and its shaft in the direction of their length.
a a in the drawings represent the interior of a room or other suitable apartment, in
which and across the top of the same is a shaft, b,
turning in bearings at each end of hangers c c d and f, two pulleys on said shaft, one of which, d, is connected by a belt or band, g, to another pulley, h, of a shaft, l, to which pulleys, by and through a connecting band or belt, m, of the pulley h, and a pulley, n, having handle o for turning the same, a rotary movement is imparted; p, a cylindrical drum, around and in the exterior periphery of which a series of brushes, q q, Src., made of any desired stiffness, are inserted in any proper manner and in a Spiral or straight direction. This drum is placed loosely upon a shaft, r, on one end ofwhich is a fixed handle, s, and on the other a similar but movable one, t, so that the drum can be placed upon or removed from the shaft at pleasure, and a new one used, if desired, either of the same or of a different stiffness. Over the drum and in a circular groove, w, at one end thereof, an endless elastic belt or band, as, made of india-rubber or any other suitable elastic material is placed, connected with and passing over the pulley f, hereinbet'ore referred to.
When desired to brush a persons hair, the cylindrical brush,arranged,as above described, upon a shaft provided with suitable handles, is held by the same with both hands, and, as it is revolved through its elastic band connecting it with the driving power, as described, brought to tlie'position upon and with regard to the head desired, thoroughly brushing and removing all dandruli from the hair and the skin of the head.
The brush can be revolved with any speed desired by simply increasing or decreasing the revolutions ot' the driving shaft, and, also, brushes of any stiuess may be used.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A revolving-brush for brushing and dressing the hair ot' the head, arrangedupon a shalt provided with suitable handles for holding the same by the hands, and connected with the driving power used by means of an elastic belt or band, substantially as herein described, and operating as specified.
rEhe above specification of my invention signed by me this 22d day ot' March, 1865.
CONRAD P. KROLL.
Witnesses ALBERT W. BROWN, M. M. LIVINGSTON.
