To ALL WuoM 1r MAY ooNonnNi Be it'known that I, JABEZ BAYSTON, ofGhicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improved Portable Revolving Hair-Brush; and I do. hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear,"and vexact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanyingI drawings,
and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part ot this specification.
am aware .that revolving hair-brushes, of a character similari-to the onesused by me, have been heretofore used, lby propelling the same by means, of elastic belts or bands, from'stationary shafts or drums, either passing across the room near the ceiling or mounted upon'the barbers chair, and propelled in the one case bysteampower, and in the other by the'i'oot of the operator, he using, however, the elasticbelt in Yboth cases, audgrasp'- ing the handles of the brush in the hand to move and operate the same; in both of .which cases the pressure 'necessary to hold-the brush upon the head, and adjust -it properly, tends frequently to prevent the rotation of the brush. Y Y V My invention relates to'van improved mode of operating a revolving hair-brush; and it consists in a novel arrangement, combined with arevolving brush, whereby asimple, cheap, and portable'deviceisobtained, which dispenses with the necessity ot'` the elastic belt, and renders it possible to manipulate the brush'without interfering with or impedin'g the desired revolving movement ofthe brush itself. Y
i Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my invention, and
Figure i? is a side view or elevationl ot' the same', i
Similar letters loi' reference inthe diiferent figures denote the same'pa-rts of my invention.
A B C D represent a frame, having bearings at one end, in vrhich'is supported a shaft, F, upon which is tixed n. brush, E. Upon one end ot' the shaft F is a spur-wheel, G, gearing with a wheel', H, which revolves upon a. prolongation vof cross-bar B or a spindle upon the frame A, and is 'provided with-a. handle, I, whereby the operator revolves the brush. D represents a curved4 bar', which is designedi torestiagainst the persort'of the operator, while J is an elastic cord passingaround h is neck, and supporting the machine inthepropefposition, whileits elasticity allows the requisite adjustment of the brush upon and around `the'hetid Yof the person being operated upon.V i o The operator grasps the round, B, with one-hand, and moves the brushto the different positions required, while with the otheri hand herevolves the wheel H and`.l; rush E, which, being held in contact withl the head, thoroughly removes all dandrui and cleans ythe scalp us desired.
I am aware that 'a revolving hair-brush of itself is not new, but that such brushes, operated by mieansof a belt froma shaft overhead, propelled by steanrpower, have been heretofore used. But said brush could only be -used inlarge establishments with high ceilings, and is, moreover, so expensive'in its applicationaspractically to render it ot` no advantage to the general trade. Moreover,.it could only be revolved in one direction, whereas it is often desirable torev'ol've the brushin twofdireetions; info-ne, when operating upon the back part of the head, and 'in the other when operating upon the frontpa'rt of the head. Besides, in the old method, 'the brush could not be raised or'loi'vered freely on account ofl the ,belts tightening or loosening, so as either to prevent the revolution ofthe brush or to slip off entirely. 4
My apparatus is n. chen-p, simple', and perfectly practical one. vIt can bc used ina-ll shops, however humble .or unpretending. It muy be revolved inoither direction at pleasure, andzinay be raised and lowered, turned up to ,either side, sofas to more over and upon all parts of the head or scalp uniformly and thoroughlyand, in short, is a practical machine; and lone whose Lulyantages are available to the publie,.instead of beingI simply a theory, as is the case with the revolving-brush as heretofore used.
i Having described the nature, construction, and operation-of my invention, I will specify what I elaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim the combination of the frame A B D, theecylindricl' brush VE, and the gearing for operating `the same, und the elastic support. J, arranged audoperating substantially as and for the purposes` specified and v shown.
JABEZ B AYSTON.
