To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNETTE FISKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for VVearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

' My invention relates to 'fastenings for Wearing apparel and consists broadly of two pieces of metal adapted to support the body and give a good contour to the figure of the wearer, and provided with a device for holding said pieces of metal together which shall be economical, readily fastened and which tends to protect the fabric from Wear.

I am aware that for fastening corsets a device has been employed, comprising two pieces of metal and a device for holding the same together, but when corsets are not worn, as is now very generally the case, there has been no means of fastening the waist so that it will keep its shape properly and not pull at the individual fastenings, or of supporting the body. And, moreover, the old device for fastening corsets is expensive and wears out fabric in contact with it.

The object of my invention is to remedy these defects, and I accomplish this result by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similarletters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the various views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device em bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, and Fig. 4. is a sectional view on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.

A and B are pieces of metal, preferably of watch-spring steel, shaped as shown in Fig. 1, to conform to the figure. A, the right hand piece, as it is attached to the gown or other article of wearing apparel, is provided with the hook-shaped tongues 0. These tongues, preferably are made integral with the piece A, thereby avoiding the necessity of rivets or other expensive method of manufacture. B, the left hand piece, as it is attached to the gown or other article of wearing apparel, is provided with slots D, arranged so as to receive and hold the hooks, e, on tongue 0. These slots are made preferably by cutting them in the metal strip near its edge at any suitable distance from each other, and then folding the metal strip upon itself so that the two edges thereof will meet; the slots thus extending through one thickness of the metal. only. The edge of the slot which is to receive the tongue 0. is then preferably slightly raised and the opposite side depressed so as to form a channel to guide the tongue into the slot D.

The side of the slot which is raised is prefer ably that nearest to. the fold in the metal, because of the increased strength at that point. This preferred method of constructing pieces A and B, with their hook-shaped tongues O and slots, D, respectively, is best shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

One of the principle features of my invention is the construction of tongues O and slots D, so that when they are in engagement the surface of the fastening is substantially plane, whereby the material is prevented from wear. The number of such tongues and slots is, of course, immaterial, depending upon thelength of the article of apparel, &c. The ends F of pieces .A and B may be any desired shape, depending upon the cut of the article of apparel.

Of course I do not limit myself to the material mentioned, nor to the particular shape shown of the pieces A and B. Some articles of apparel fasten down the side under the arm,in which case said pieces should be shaped accordingly; and said piecesA and B maybe transposed so as to be on the left and right sides respectively, or the tongues and slots may be alternately on the one and the other of said pieces, without departing from my invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A fastening for gowns and other articles of wearing apparel, consisting of two strips of metal, one of which is provided with hooks, the other strip being composed of two plies or thicknesses of metal, one of said plies only being provided with slots and having the metal at one side of said slots depressed, substantially as described.
