Description

(No Model.)
W. A. ROSS.
DERRICK. No. 498,816. Patented June 6,1893.
NINE/V701? ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. ROSS, OF MARYVILLE, MISSOURI.
DERRICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,816, dated June 6, 1893. Application filed January 24,1893. Serial No. 459,576. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. ROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maryville, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transformer-Derricks;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in transformer derricks; and the object of the invention is to providea light, and strong derrick, adapted to be attached to any electric light pole and used to support a block and tackle by which a transformer can be hoisted to the desired elevation and held there until it is securely fastened to the pole.
With these ends in view my invention consists of an upright bar or standard provided with means for attachment to a pole and having a laterally projecting arm adapted to support a block and tackle designed to be used -to hoist a transformer into position on the pole.
My invention further consists in the pecu' liar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
:In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of an electric light pole showing my improved derrick attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is adetail detached view of the derrick.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings, referring to which:
A designates an electric light support or pole and on said pole is secured a block or support, B, designed to support a transforming device.
My improved derrick consists of an upright bar or standard, 0, which is provided on one face with any desired number of projecting spurs, D, designed to enter the body of the pole, A, and maintain the bar, 0, in position thereon. The bar or standard, 0, is further connected to the pole, A, by means of straps or bands, E, which extend through guideloops or eyes F, preferably welded to the outer face of the bar, 0, said straps or bands being adapted to encircle the pole, A, and have their ends connected by suitable buckles. The upper portion of the bar, C, is bent to form a laterally projecting arm, G, which extends across the upper end of the pole, A, and in said arm, G, preferably near the outer end thereof, is formed an eye, H, designed to receive a hook attached to a block and tackle which is intended to be used to hoist the transformer into proper position to enable it to be securely attached to the block, B, and pole, A.
At a point about midway of its length, as at, I, the bar or standard, 0, is bent or twisted so that the portion above said point lies at right angles to the portion below said. point. A short distance above the twist, I, one end of a horizontally extending bar or arm, K, is firmly attached to the bar, 0, and at its outer end said horizontal arm is provided with a depending foot, L, which is shaped so as to receive and fit snugly over the upper end of the pole, A. The horizontally projecting arm, K, and upright, C, are further connected by an inclined brace bar, M, the ends of which are firmly united to said upright and horizontally extending arm by any suitable means;
The laterally projecting arm, G, of my improved derrick may, as shown in the drawings, be formed integral with the upright bar or standard, 0, or may be made separate therefrom and firmlyattached thereto by any suitable and desirable means.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and its advantages appreciated by those'skilled in the art.
Among the advantages may be mentioned its simplicity and lightness thus enabling it to be readily transferred from place to place; and the ease and rapidity with which it can be secured in place on and removed from a pole after the transformer shall have been secured in place.
The derrick although light is very strong and it will be noticed that by the employment of the foot, L, brace, M, and bar, K, the weight is mainly supported directly by the pole.
The derrick can be easily attached to any pole and besides serving for the purpose for IOC which it is'primarily designed will be found very useful by linemen in hoisting up wire, cross pieces, &c.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A derrick consisting of an upright bar or standard provided with means for attachment to a pole or support, an arm attached to said bar and arranged to support a block and tackle, and a foot carried by said upright bar and adapted to rest on top of the poleto which said upright is attached, substantially as described.
2. The combination witha derrick consisting of an upright provided with a laterally projecting arm, adapted to support a block and tackle, of a strap fitted in an eye or loop attached to the upright and adapted to encircle a pole to bind the upright thereto, subslantially as described. 7
3. A derrick consisting of an upright having a series of spurs on one face and an eye or loop, designed to receive astrap, on its other face, a laterally projecting arm attached to the upright and adapted to support a block and tackle, and a foot carried by the upright and adapted to rest on the top of a pole to which the upright may be attached, substantially as described.
at. A derrick consisting of an upright provided with means for attachment to a pole and with the intermediate twist, I, and having its upper portion bent to form a laterally projecting arm adapted to support a block and tackle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
