Be it known that I, yLouis BLUMENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of bedsknown as extension or folding beds and the invention consists in certain novel features pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which- Figure 1, is aface view of the bed closed or folded. Fig. 2, is a section along a: Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a section similar to Fig. 2 the bed being opened. Fig. 4, is a section along y y Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a detail view showing an inclined guide way.

In. the drawings the letterAindicates a stationary casing or base, to which is jointed at B, the main bed frame C, in such manner as to provide a projecting part at the head end of the frame C, which is provided with an eye or loop E for engaging a hook or catch F pivoted to the front wall of the stationary casing and projecting inside the latter. The main bed frame O carries the sliding frame or extension D. The hook or catch F is provided with an extension projecting in front of the stationary casing and constituting a foot piece G, so that the foot can be placed thereupon to release the hook or catch F from the eye or loop E, and thus permit the frame C to swing down to the position indicated in Fig. 3.

The frame C has a main mattress or bed portion H jointed by loops or connections I to the frame C. The lower end of the main mattress H is held in position by a support K jointed at L to the extension D. The support K is connected to the foot or feet N of the extension D by a link or connection M jointed to the support K and to the foot N. When the foot N is swung up or folded the support K is swungl in the direction of arrow l (Fig. 3) so as to raise the lower end of mattress portion H above the top of the Vextension mattress portion O leaving the extension D with its mattress portion O free to be pushed or run into the main frame C.

The frame D has tongues or projections P running in the inclined grooves or guide ways Qin the frame C. The tongues P are secured each by a screw or. fastening R to a side of frame D and as the. grooves Q do not run completely to the end of frame C (Fig. 5) the tongues P prevent the extension D being drawn entirely out of frame O unless the screws R are removed. The ways Q being inclined downward toward the head of the bed the extension D as it is run into the frame O gradually sinks so that when the extension D is entirely in (Fig. 2) the mattress portion H will not have its top project above frame O.

The mattress portion H may have a further support on frame C at S and said frame O may have folding legs T. The head rest U swings on the frame C at V and said rest has swinging legs W adapted to rest against a shoulder X on the main frame to keep the head rest in position as seen in Fig. 3. l

W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

' 1. The combination with a stationary casing A, and a main bed frame C pivoted to the casing and provided with inclined ways, of a mattress H hinged at its head to the head portion of the main bed frame, a sliding bed frame or extension D engaging the inclined ways of the main bed frame, and a movable support K carried by the sliding bed frame or extension and arranged to lift the foot end of the mattress to permit the sliding frame or eX- tension to move thereunder, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a stationary casing A, of a main bed section C provided with inclined ways and hinged to the casing to swing from a perpendicular to a horizontal position, a mattress hinged at its head to the main bed frame, and a sliding bed frame or extension D engaging the inclined ways and provided with a hinged support K at its inner end for lifting the foot end of the mattress, substantially as described. j

3. The combination witha main bed frame having a mattress portion H, of a sliding bed frame or extension, and inclined ways on which said extension is made to travel, said extension being providedawith a swinging support K, and having swinging legs to which said support is connected, so that when the legs are swung in or folded the support is actuated to raise the main mattress or bed por- IOO tion H to allow the extension to pass thereunder, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a main bed frame having a mattress portion H, of a sliding bed frame or extension, and inclined ways on which said extension is made to travel, said extension being provided with a swinging su pport K, and having swinging legs and a link M jointed to said legs and to the support, so that when the legs are swung in or folded the support is actuated to raise the main mattress or bed portion H to allow the extension to pass thereunder, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a main bed frame having a mattress portion, of a sliding bed frame or extension, and inclined ways on which said extension is made to travel, said extension being provided with a swinging support K for the foot of the main bed or mattress portion, and said main mattress portion being hinged at its head to the main frame, substantially as described.

6. The combination with a main bed frame having a mattress portion, of a sliding bed frame or extension, and inclined ways on which said extension is made to travel, said extension being provided with a swinging support K for the main mattress portion, and a head rest made to swing on the main frame and provided with legs or supports, said main frame having a shoulder for supporting said legs to keep the head rest in position, substantially as described.
