CABLE-FASTENING APPARATUS FOR H YDRAULIC ELEVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,434, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed August 5, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HULTGREN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Cable-Fastening Apparatus for Hydraulic Elevators; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cable fastening apparatus for hydraulic elevators, and hasfor its objects to provide such an apparatus which shall be of simple and economical construction and of superior efficiency in its operation.
To these ends my invention consists of the devices and appliances, their construction, combination and arrangement as hereinafter specified and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in detail of one of the fastening arms. Fig. 3 is a separate end view of the groove guide plate or bracket on the extremity of the cylinder head. Fig. 4is a cross section on the line :rw Fig. 1.
I carry out my invention as follows:
A represents the hydraulic cylinder of the elevator. B denotes hoisting cables extending to the rear of said cylinder.
E is a frame work projecting rearward from the cylinder,in which is journaled a shaftE, which shaft carries the customary sheaves, not shown, over which the hoisting cables pass at the rear end of the cylinder.
D is an oscillatory yoke engaged upon the sheaf-shaft E.
C and C denote fastening arms engaging the extremities of the cables, and constructed with screw threaded stems passed through the extremities of said yoke and held in place therein by bars a, said bars also providing for a proper adjustment of said fastening arms. The sheave-shaft E thus serves the double purpose of carrying the sheave in the Serial No. 442,260. (No model.)
ordinary manner, and also of carrying the yoke D providing a means of attachment for the extremities of the cables.
Heretofore it has been common to provide an independent shaft to carry means of attachment for the ends of the cables. By 10- cating the yoke D on the shaft E, the construction is simplified. The fastening arms are each bifurcated at their opposite extremities, the forward end of each fork c being preferably constructed with a shoulder 0 The inner surfaces of the forks are also preferably concaved to fit upon the cables.
C denotes a central core, concaved on its exterior edge, and C is a collar passed about the forks 0' when the cable is in place. The end of each of the cables is bent about the core C and engaged between the inner edges of the forks. The outer extremities of the forks converge and are held from spreading by said collar, aifordinga firm engagement with the ends of the cables.
A denotes a grooved guide plate or bracket engaged with the rear extremity of the cylinder, the same being preferably cast integral with the head A of the cylinder. This plate or bracket A is constructed with any desired number of arc shaped guide grooves a to hold the cables in place.
The advantages of this construction, relation and combination of parts are evident.
I do not limit myself to the specific construction of the fastening arms C and C above described, as any suitable fastening device may be used to engage the extremities of the cables and the extremities of the oscillatory yoke.
The purpose of connecting the cables B with the oscillatory yoke D is to equalize the ten sion upon the extremities of the cables. I have shown two cables connected with said yoke, but as many cables may be connected therewith as may be desired. The opposite extremities of the cables are extended about a pulley and attached to the car in the usua manner.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a hydraulic elevator, the combination of the hoisting cables, the oscillatory yoke, the fastening arms 0 C engaged with said IO said yoke, said arms each forked at their forward extremities to engage the extremities of the cables, and a collar located over said forks, substantially as described.
