Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. HEDG- oocn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car brakes, and has particular reference to an improvement on the construction shown in the patent to Posson, No. 789,879, May 16, 1905. In the construction of the patent referred to, means are provided for maintaining a pair of brake beams in parallelism by the use of parallel motion means comprising a bar extending from one beam to the other and con nected to each beam by means of two links or levers. The present invention relates to means for applying such improvements to beams already in use.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved means, the parts being shown as applied to a brake beam, the compression and tension members of which are shown in section, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, it will be seen that a brake beam to which the improvement is applied may comprise a compression member 10, tension member 11 and strut 12. A. brake lever 13 is pivoted in the strut at 1 1, and at its lower end is pivoted to a pair of long links 15, which extend and are attached to a beam in exactly the manner shown herein. To the outer end of the bars 15 is pivoted a link 16, the upper end of which is pivoted to a casting 17. This casting is provided with an apertured ear 18, which lies between two similar apertured cars 19 integral with the strut 12. A foot, or projection, 20 extends beyond the lug 18 and lies against the strut 12. T he lower portion of the casting is provided with an arcuate recess 21, which fits the tension rod 11. A
pin or rivet 22 extends through the apertured lugs 18, 19, and serves to securely hold the extension or casting in place and pro vides a simple means for the connection of the parallel motion means to a brake beam of the common construction.
Obviously the construction is capable of considerable modification, and such modifications as are within the scope of my claims I cons1der within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In brake-construction, the combination of a brake beam having a strut and provided with an apertured lug, parallel motion means extending between adjacent beams, and an extension secured to the apertured lug on said strut and providing means for the attachment of said parallel motion means, substantially as described.
2. In a brake, the combination of a beam having a strut and provided with an apertured lug in substantially the plane of the tension member of said beam, parallel m0- tion means extending between adjacent beams, and a casting secured to the apertured lug on said strut, and adapted to provide means for the fastening of said parallel motion means, substantially as described.
3. In brake construction, the combination of a beam having a strut, a brake lever pivoted to said strut and having a portion extending on each side thereof, an apertured lug on said strut, a casting having a pair of ears and adapted to be secured to said apertured lug, a bar secured to one end of said brake lever and adapted to extend to an ad jacent beam, and a link connecting the end of said bar to the apertured ears on said casting and adapted to provide a parallel motion means, substantially as described.
