ADJUSTER FOR OIL-WELLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE C. MOORE, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented a new and useful Improvement in Adjusters for Oil-Tells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumping rigs, and more particularly to adjusters between the walking beam or other pump reciprocating mechanism and the connection lead ng to the pump in oil' or other well pumping IIOS.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjuster in which the adjustment can be quickly and easily made and which absolutely holds the parts against sllpplng.
The invention comprises the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is in part a side elevation and in part a vertical section of my improved adjuster; Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2-2, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a modification.
In the drawings 2 represents a portion of a walking beam which is the usual reciprocating mechanism used in pumping oil wells, 3 illustrates the upper end of the usual cable which extends down into the well and is connected to the pump. This cable is secured-in a clamp 4 which may be of any desired construction, and which is shown as connected by chains 5 to a yoke 6 carried by the lower end of the adjuster, all as is common in oil well pumping rigs.
The adjuster comprises two parts or members which are adjustable longitudinally with reference to each other. One of these parts comprises a tube 7 having at its upper end a tee or cross head 8 for connection to the walking beam in the usual manner. At its lower end this tube is threaded into a socket in a casting 9 which is provided with an opening therethrough for receiving the rod 10 constituting the other member of the adjuster and which at its lower end has the yoke 6 secured thereto by suitable means, such as by the nut 11 and cotter pin 12. The rod 10 is provided for a portion of its length with suitable notches, shown in the form of annular grooves 14 and the holding or clamping means comprises a U bolt 15 fitting in a transverse seat 16 in the casting Specification of Letters Patent.

9. The casting is provided with transverse holes 17 through which the legs of the U bolt project. The ends of said legs are threaded as shown to receive the clamping nuts 18. The U bolt holds the rod 10 by having its curved portion and legs engaging one of the annular grooves on said rod. This provides a very positive grip and one which cannot slip, but without putting excessive strain on the threads of the U-bolt or nuts. The curved or looped end of the U bolt it will be observed in Fig. 1 rests on the seat 16 so that said U bolt isnot subjected to any bending strains. The rod 10 may be square or other cross-sectional shape and the U bolt should conform thereto. It is preferred to have the rod 10 circular and the grooves therein annular, so that said rod may turn in the U-bolt with the twisting of the cable and prevent snarling or untwisting of the latter.
By the mechanism described the adjustment can be very quickly and easily made. This is done by first tightening the cable on the bull wheel spindle as is common, after which the nuts 18 are loosened merely sufficiently to allow the U bolt to free the grooves in rod 10, when the rod 10 and tube 7 can be readily moved toward or away from each other to secure the desired adjustment and the U bolt then again tightened to firmly lock the parts together.
The device is very strong and of simple construction and slipping is absolutely prevented.
If mechanical means are desired for making the adjustment after the U bolt is loosened, it can be accomplished in various ways, such for instance as shown in Fig. 3 in which the rod 10 is shown provided with notches or rack teeth 20 along one side which are engaged by a toothed wheel 21 rotatably mounted in suitable bearings in the lower portion of the casting 9. The spindle 22 of this wheel is adapted to have secured thereto a wrench, crank or other means for rotating said wheel. Obviously the rotation of said wheel will move the rod 10 and tube 7 longitudinally relatively to each other. Various other mechanical devices for relatively moving the parts will readily suggest themselves.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination of a hollow member provided at its upper end with means for a connection to pump reciprocating mechanism and at its lower end with rod clampping means, an adjusting rod arranged for attachment to the pump connecting means and projecting into the hollow member and provided wit-h a series of grooves, and a clamping member mounted in the lower end of the hollow member and movable transversely thereof and arranged to engage the grooves on the rod.
2. The combination of a hollow member provided at its upper end with means for connection to pump reciprocating mechanism and at its lower end with rod clamping means including a U bolt, and an adjusting rod arranged for attachment at its lower end to the pump connecting means and projecting into the hollow member and provided with transverse surface grooves di rectly engaged by said U bolt.
3. The combination of a hollow member provided at its upper end with means for connection to pump reciprocating mechanism and at its lower end with rod clamping means including a transverse or horizontal seat, an adjusting rod arranged for attach ment to the pump connecting means and projecting into the hollow member and provided with aseries of annular transverse surface grooves, and a U bolt mounted in the transverse seat in the hollow member and arranged to engage the annular grooves in the rod.
