UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
FRANK M. KENNEDY, OF CYGNET, OHIO, AssIeNoR OF TWO-THIRDS TO CHARLES OUSAO, OF SAME PLACE, AND JANE, W. sToNE, OF BROOKLYN,
NEW YORK.
POLISHED-ROD ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,264, dated December 18, 1894.
Application filed May 28 1894.. Serial No. 512,778. (No model.)
My invention relates to polished rod adj usters, and has especial relation to the beam connection and polished rod grip, the object being to simplify these parts'so that the polished rod cfian be removed or adjusted from the derrick oor.
The invention consists essentially in a frame, the upper end of which is swiveled to a journal immovably secured to the beam, the lower end extending to a point near the derrick and provided with a grip for the polished The invention further consists in the parts substantially as shown in the drawings, described in the specification, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of the walking beam and polished rod, showing the connection comprising my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the grip 5 plate.
1 designates the walking beam, having a slot 2, in the end thereof. Resting upon the top of the beam, is a plate 3, having a central orifice through which and the opening 2 in the beam, passes the king bolt 4., which is screw-threaded and has a nut 5 upon the upper end thereof. Secured upon the king bolt and resting against the lowerside of the beam is a journal plate 6, said plate having a semi- 5 circular recess in the lower side, and resting in the recess, is one side of the semi-circular swivel plate 7-, which is held against the journal by the journal washer 8, which is held in position by the nut 9. Upon opposite sides of the swivel plate are lugs 10, in which are secured the upper ends of the tubes or rods 11, the lower ends passing through the grip plate 12, and are secured thereto by the nuts 13, screwed upon the rods and bearing upon each side of the grip plate.
By this construction it Will be seen that I have provided for a rigid beam connection, and for a frame comprising the swivel plate 7, rods 11, and grip plate 12, which has a swiveled movement with relation to the beam connection between the journal 6, and the jour- 6o nal washer 8, it being understood that the swivel plate is cut away, as at 14, so as to allow a free movement of the same without contact with the king bolt. Grip plate 12, has a central conical recess 15 cut away at one side, as at 16, of a size corresponding to the diameter of the polished rod 17, the upper portion of the recess being screw-threaded, as at 18, to receive the clamp nut 19, and resting in the recess 15 when the polished rod is inserted, and bearing against the same, are slips 20, preferably one upon each side, having an inclined outer side, of an inclination equal to the side of the conical recess. There fore, as the clamp nut is screwed doWn,-the slips are forced downwardly, wedging against the polished rod, gripping the same and holding it in a set position.
In operation, to insert and secure the polished rod, it is inserted through the open-ing in So the grip plate. The slips are placed therein,
one upon each side of the rod, and the clamp nutis slipped upon the polished rod and secured into the grip plate, forcing the slips downward, and thereby clamping the polished 8 5 rod. As the beam is raised and lowered, the swivel will allow of the adjustment between the beam connection and the frame, due to the difierent inclinations of the beam.
While I have shown a specific form of go swivel, it will be understood that a ball and socket joint may be used at this point, in lieu of the one shown, but that any swivel connection may be used, my invention consisting in a rigid beam connection and a frame 5 extending below the same to a point near the derrick floor having a swivel relation with the beam connection.
What I claim is--- 1. In polished rod adjusters, in combination rod with a beam, a plate upon'the top of the beam,
2 names a bolt passed therethrough and extending beneath the beam, a journal plate and a journal washer secured upon the bolt beneath the beam 2. plate secured between the journal 5 plate and journal washer with a swivel movement and rods secured at their upper ends to the plate, the lower ends having a grip to hold the polished rod.
2. In polished rod adjusters, a beam, a frame 10 extending beneath the same having swivel relation thereto, a grip plate upon the lower end of the frame having a conical opening, and a communicating slot through one side FRANK M. KENNEDY.
