UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP GERHARD HENDRIK DOP, OF 'PREOHT, NETHERLANDS.
PROTVECTIVE COVERING FOR THE SEATS OF WATER-CLOSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'498,159, dated May 23, 1893. Application led November 28,1892. SerialNo. 453,405'. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP GERHARD HEN- DRIKDOP,a subject of the Queen of The Netherlands, residing at Utrecht, Holland, h aVe 1nvented an Improved Protective Coverlng for the Seats of Water-Closets and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a simple and inexpensive protective covering for the seats of water closets and the like. A protective covering for this purpose according to this invention consists of suitable sheet material such as paper formed with a hole or perforation to correspond with the hole in the seat to which it is to be applied, andthe edge portion of which is made of two or more thicknesses of material cut or slit in such a manner as to form a number of flaps each of which is opposite to the out or slit between two of the flaps of the adjacent sheet of ma-'- terial, the arrangement being such that when the covering is applied to a seat, the llap por# tions can be turned downward so as to cornpletely cover the edge of the hole in the seat.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a cross section on the line A B Fig. l, of a` protective covering according to this invention.
This covering consists of a thin sheet l of paper formed with a hole 2 therethrough of smaller size than the hole in the seat to which itis to be applied. To this sheet and around the hole therein is secured by suitable means such as gum or paste a second sheet o r strip 3 of paper formed with ahole corresponding approximately with that in the sheet l so that around the edge of the holein the combined sheets there will be two strips or layers of paper one of which, namely that forming part of the sheet l, is cutor slit as at l?, while the other forming part of the sheet or strip 3, is similarly cut or slit as at 3, the cuts or slits in the latter being out of line with those in the former. These cuts or slits serve to divide the material around the hole into two annular or approximately annular yseries of flaps, those in one series covering the cuts or slits between those in the .other series. By this means when the covering 1s in use and the flaps are bent downward as indicated in dotted lines, they will effectually and completely cover the edge 4 of the hole in the seat 5 to which the protective covering is applied. f
My improvedA protective covering can be treated with any suitable disinfectant, or perfume, and may advantageously be made of such a size that a portion thereof can when the covering is in use, hang over the front or outer edge of the seat to which it is applied as indicated at lb in Fig. 2.
What I claimisl. A protective covering for the seats of water closets and the like, consisting of sheet material formed with a hole therethrough to correspond with the hole in the seat to which said covering is to be applied and the edge of which is provided with a number of overlapping aps-or part-s substantially as herein described for the purpose specified.
2. A. protective covering for the seats of water closets and the like consisting of per-- forated sheet material made of two or more thicknesses around the hole therein, these thicknesses being slit or cut in such a manner as to form two or more series of aps that extend completely around the edge of the hole, the iaps in one series being arranged to overlap those in the other series in a lateral direction substantially as herein described for the purpose specified. p
3. The improved protective covering for the seats of water closets and thelike consisting of a sheet l of paper formed with a hole 2 the edge portion of which is slit or out at a number of points la and a strip 3 of paper secured to the first sheet around the hole therein and formed with a number of slits or cuts 3a arranged out of line with those in the said sheet 1 substantially as herein described for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILIP GERHARD HENDRIK D01).
