Specification of Letters Eatent,
Patented an. 2, 1917.
Application filed January 4, 1916. Serial No. 70,183.
To alt whom it may concern I Be it known that I, FRANK J. CUNHA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayward, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a.new and useiul Improvement in Sanltarv Devices for Toilet-Seats, of which the following out this object, I employ, in combina tion, a simple and inexpensive holder adapt: M
ed to be attached directly tothe' hinged seat cover at one side thereof and carrying a roll of paper or other covering for the seat, cooperating feed rollers at the opposite side of the seatalso secured to the cover for drawing a paper transversely of the seat, and. means in connection with said feed rollers for perforating or otherwise preparing the paper in a suitable manner to form strips of paper of toilet size.
Two forms which my invention may assume are exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying d swings, in which F gure 1 shows a plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical, sectional view of the same. Fig.
- 3 shows a detail of the feed rollers employed therein, illustrating the perforators or cutting devices thereon. Fig. 4 shows a front elevation of'a modified form of my device. Fig. 5 showsza strip of the paper or other covering employed herein. 4
Referring in detail to the device, as illustrated, I have shown a cylindrical casing having a base 11 provided with a curved flanged portion 12, shaped. to fit the contour of a, toilet seat cover iiiand secured thereto, at one side, by means of screws, or the like. The casing 10 is formed in two longitudinal sections, hinged together, as at 14, and a spool 15 is inserted in said casing and carrise a roll of paper or other covering 16-provided at intervals with transversely extending openings 17. A spring-pressed tightener 18 is carried ,withinthe casing and engages with the roll of paper therein to hold the same taut.
guide slot 19 is formed in the front of,
the casing 16, through which passes a web of paper from the roll, 16 insm-h a position I as to cover the upper surface of the seat 13, and running transversely thereof to the oppos1te side where a pair of contacting feed rollers 2021 are arranged in a casing 22,
said casing being, as in'the case of member 1Q, similarly provided with a base 23 formed with'a curved flanged portion 24 to fit the sideof the seat 13 for attachment thereto.
. The web of paper passes through an openingI25 in the .front of the casing-22 and between the feed rollers 20 and 21 and outwardlythrough a slot 26in said casing. One of the rollers 20 and21 carries a crank handle 2 7 for operating the same, and a suitable pawl and ratchet mechanism 28 may be provided on said rollers for preventing backward movement of the same and consequent loosening of the web of paper as it is drawn therethrough.
The feed rollers carry coiiperating perforating members 29 and 30, preferably two sets, spaced equidistant from'eaoh otherand from the ends ofthe rollers, adapted to cut or weaken the web of paper along the longitudinally extending dotted lines a and I; so as to form three longitudinal stripsof coniparatively narrow width. These perforating members are shown as comprising a toothed disk 29, on the upper roller, and a notcheddisk 30, on the lower roller, cooper ating therewith, but, obviously, the form thereof may easily be varied or severing devices substituted therefor. The outlet slot 26 in the casing is preferably provided with a fixed severing ufpper edge whereby to weaken the web of paper transversely along the dotted line a and permit the same to be readily torn oifin any desired length. Preferably the transverse line 0 should extend centrally through the opening 17 in the paper for greater convenience, thereby severing or perforating devices are omitted and a single feed roller 31 and casing 32, similar to casing 10, are substituted .for the pair of rollers 20 and 21. The roller 31 is operated by a crank 33 and rewinds the paper as it is fed thereto through a slot 3e inthe front of the casing. The casing 32.
being divided and hinged permits a ready removal of the feed roller 31 therefrom for the purpose of disposing of the used paper or :ther covering. In this instance cloth may be substituted for the paper and after proper treatment utilized again.
An important advantage of my device is its manner of application to a toilet seat covering and its light and compact construction which permit a hinged seat cover to be raised and lowered at will without interference. i Where similar devices are attached to external parts this operation is prevented,
The longitudinal lines a and 7) and transverse line aformed upon the web of paper may be provided therein previous to putting the same upon the supply roller, in which case the perforating members 29 and 30 and the serrations on the slot 26 could be dispensed with; However, it is al ays preferable to omit the transverse weakening line 0 in the manufactured paper owing to the danger of tearing the web as it is drawn from the supply roller across the seat.
Other changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of my device may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed in the. appended claim.
Having thus describediny invention, what .I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- cm; is-
In 'a sanitary device 'for toilet seats, means to support an apertured roll of paper side of the seat, means on the oppr i of the seat to longitudinally score the po e; after the latter has passed out of engrave ment with the seat, and a fixed severing means located beyond the last named side of the seat to transversely sever the paper into as many waste sheets as the scoring initially forms, said scored portion of the paper be ing disposed so as to depend from the latter side of the seat with its outer end free so that the occupant may grasp said outer end and sever same while the succeeding past of the sheet is held against movement by the occupant sitting thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK J.
