WIll'lESEES I lqVaql'ur I NORRIS PETERS ca. PHOTO-UI'HQ. WASHINGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BOVVIE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,749, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed June 6, 1892. Serial No. 435.612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. BOWIE, of Boston, county of Suffolk,State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lounges, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to that class of beds commonly called lounge or couch beds, and has for its object to construct the same so that it mav be extended transversely, or
widened to make a full width bed, or it may be closed up and used as a single bed, or when made up and provided with a suitable coverlet serves as, and represents an upholstered lounge or couch.
In accordance with this invention, the longitudinal side rails are connected togetherby two or more sets or pairs of levers, which are pivotally connected to the side rails at one end, and to each other at the opposite end, and said sets or pairs of levers are also connected together by a pair of levers which cross each other, and are pivoted together at or near the center, being pivotally connected at the ends to the levers, which are connected to the side rails. Means are provided for spreading said levers to widen the bed, and also for closing said levers to narrow the bed. Slats, carrying springs, are supported on the levers, which connect the side rails in such a manner as to separate or crowd together according as the bed is widened or narrowed.
The drawing shows in plan View a bed extended to its full width, the slats being broken away to expose the parts beneath. The side rails a, a, supported on suitable legs, have connected to them at each end suitably shaped transverse end pieces aiwhich when abutting against each other endwise present a single width bed. The head board I), and foot board 0, are also provided of a width corresponding to a single width bed, each of which has a foot or step b, 0, upon which the said end piece a slides. Levers d, d, of a length substant-iallyequal to the width of the single bed are pivotally connected to the side rail a, at 2, 2, and levers d d of alength substantially equal to the length of the levers (Z, d, are pivpair of levers d, (1 are pivotally connected together at their adjacent ends at 5. A pair of levers e, e, are crossed, and pivoted together at or near the center as at 6, the ends of said crossed levers being pivotally connected to the levers d, (1', (Z (Z as shown. The crossed levers e, e, serve to keep the pairs of levers d, (Z and 61', (P, in parallelism. A cord or chain f, is connected to the lever d which extends through the foot board 0, to be easily accessible so that when pulled the levers cl, d will be turned on their pivots and closed up or brought toward each other, while the levers d, 61 will be moved in parallelism therewith, to thereby narrow the bed. A cord or chain f, is connected to the lever 01, thence passing over a pulley f on the head board, and thence beneath the levers and through the foot board 0, so that it may be easily accessible and when pulled will spread the levers 61, d moving the levers d, d in parallelism therewith to thereby widen the bed. However in lieu of connecting the cords or chains to these particular levers they may be otherwise connected, and the same result accomplished, and furthermore I do not desire to limit my invention to the use of cords or chains for the purpose of spreading or closing the levers. Transverse end frames g, g, are, or may be secured to the side rail a, and transverse end frames g 9 are, or may be secured to the side rail at, opposite said end frames g, 9, said frames g 9 having at their lower ends each a foot or step upon which the end frames g, g, slide. Slats t, carrying springs t", are supported on said 'pivoted levers, and the side slats are rigidly connected to said end frames by screws, or otherwise, and the middle slat is rigidly connected to the head and foot boards by cleats or otherwise. The intermediate slats are connected with said rigidly attached slats by cords n, so that when the side rails a,a.', are separated carrying the side slats with them the intermediate slats will be separated as the cords are drawn tau-t. The slats 'i, are slotted as at F, which receive pins i on the levers by means of which said slats are guided, yet said slats may be otherwise guided. Suitablelegs having casters will be provided.
1. In a transversely extensible lounge or couch bed the combination of the transversely movable side rails a, a, transversely extensible bed bottom connected therewith, the levers d, d, pivotally connected to the side rail a. and levers d d pivotally connected to the side rail a, the extremities of said levers (1, d being pivotally connected together, and the extremities of said levers d, d being likewise pivot-ally connected together, the crossed levers e, e, pivotally connected together at 6, and pivotally connected at their.
extremities to the levers d, d, d d all substantially as described.
2. In a transversely extensible lounge or couch bed the combination of the transversely movable side rails a, a, transversely extensible bed bottom connected thereto, levers d, d, pivotally connected to the side rail a, and levers d d pivotally connected to the side rail 61., the extremities of said levers d, 01 being pivotally connected together, and the extremities of the levers d, (1 being likewise pivotally connected together, lever 6', connecting the levers (1, 61 and lever e connected to levers d, d said levers e, e, being also connected together, and two operating devices acoessible at one end of the bed, one for spreading and the other for closing said levers, substantially as described.
3. In a transversely extensible lounge or couch bed, the combination of the head board and foot board, transversely movable side rails, and transverse slat supporting frames secured thereto, a series of longitudinal slats carrying springs thereon, the side slats of which are rigidly secured to their supports, and the middle slat of which is rigidly secured to said head and foot boards, while the slats between the rigidly supported middle slat, and the rigidly supported side slats are independently movable on their supports, and flexible connections connecting said independently movable slats together at each side of said middle slats, and also connecting them to the middle and side slats, substantially as described.
4. In a transversely extensible lounge or couch bed, the combination of the head board and foot board, the transversely movable side rails a, a, transverse slat-supporting frames secured thereto, a series of longitudinal slats carrying springs thereon, the side slats of which are rigidly secured to their supports, and the middle slat of which is rigidly secured to the head and foot boards, while the intermediate slats are independently movable on their supports, and two pairs of pivoted levers connecting the side rails and means for moving said levers to widen or narrow the bed, guide pins on said levers which work in slots in said spring supporting slats, substan tially as described.
5. In a transversely extensible lounge or couch bed, the combination of the'head board and foot board, and transversely movable side rails a, a, transverse slat supporting frames secured thereto, a series of longitudinal slats carrying springs thereon, the side slats of which are rigidly secured to their supports, and the middle slat of which is rigidly secured to the head and foot boards, while the intermediate slats are independently movable on their supports, flexible connections between said independently movable slats connecting them with the rigidly supported side and middle slats, two pairs of pivoted levers connecting the side rails, the pivots at the junction of said levers being located beneath the rigidly supported middle slat, and following in guide-ways formed therein, and means for moving the said levers to widen or narrow the bed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM S. BOWIE.
