UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. DAVIS, OF SEWIOKLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
FLUE-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,636, dated May 16, 1893.
A Application filed July 12, 1892. $eria1 No. 439,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HORATIO DAVIS, of Sewickley, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Flue-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved flue brush, which is simple and durablein construction, veryeffective in operation, not liable to get out of order, and arranged to securely hold the bristles in place.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of thei'mprovement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 4et of Fig. 3.
The improved flue brush is provided with a tube A, of suitable length and diameter, and formed with rowsof apertures B, the number of rows correspondingto' the height of the.
bristles for the brush.
On the inside of thetubeA and for each row of apertures B is arranged a wire 0, carrying the bristles D, made of suitable material and each formed of a number of individual bristles bent over at the middle and over the wires and passed through the respective opening B in the tube A to the outside of the same, so as to extend from the latter, as shown, the doubled up end however being inside of the tube and passed around the respective wire 0. The latter, as well as inner ends of the bunches of bristles are covered by a lining E, made in the shape of a tube riveted or otherwise fastened at its ends to the ends of the tube A, so that no material'can pass to the wires from the in- .side of the tube. As shown inthe drawings,
some of the rivets or other fastening devices for the upper end of .the lining also pass through the arms of the guide F, provided at the upper end with the usual socket G, for atcaching the handle of the brush. It is understood thatthe arms of the guide F are curved outwardly so as to form a guide forthe brush in the tube to be cleaned. It will be seen that by this construction the inner bent over end of each bunch of bristles is completely protected by the lining E so that the brush will last until the bristles are worn off at their outer ends.
Having thus fully described my invention, 7
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A flue brush, comprising a tube provided with rows of apertures for the passage of the bristles, a wire fitted on the inside of the tube for each row of apertures, bunches of bristles bent over on the said wire and each passed through an aperture in the said tube, and a tubular lining attached atits'ends to the said tube at the insidethereof, and forming a cover for the said wires and bent over ends of the bristles, substantially as shown and described.
2. A flue brush, comprising a tube provided with rows of apertures for the passage of the bristles, awire fittedon the inside of the tube for each row of apertures, bunches of bristles v JOSEPH H. DAVIS. Witnesses:
