UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THALIA E. SIPE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TAlLO RS MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,503, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed January 18,1889. Renewed February 21,1893. Serial No. 463,263. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,THALIA E. SIPE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dressmaking-Charts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in pattern charts used for drafting the patterns of womens and childrens dresses, and its design is to save time and labor and to enable the easy production of a garment which can be made without refitting. By its use, I am enabled to make garments of such graceful shape as to impart tothe figure a slender, sloping, long waisted appearance, with a neat narrow look across the waist, which is the object of every artistic dressmaker to impart, and which is easy and comfortable to the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved board or drafting square. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reverse side thereof.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each.
Referring now to Fig. 1:The board or square is provided with a straight edge A B,
. and preferably, with a straight edge A C at right angles thereto. The edge A B is divided by scale marks, as shown in Fig. 1. The board has also an edge B, D, of elliptical curvature as accurately representedin Fig. 1, and an edge D, O of substantially parabolic curvature as shown. The curved edge B, D near the end B, forms the guide for laying off the darts, nearthe end D it forms the guide for the curvature of the side form in the back, and at the middle portion it forms the guide for the seams. The curved edge 0, D, forms the guide for the arm-scye. The board is also formed with a cut out portion having a curved edge E, F, of elliptical, nearly circular, outline. This edge forms the guide for the neck. The proper radius of the curve is correctly illustrated in the drawings. There are eight lines of figures referring to these scale marks, which in order are the following:-Long, half of long, third of long, front of neck, breast, chest, shoulder, and waist. The long measure is for the purpose of laying off the measures from the collar bone to the waist. The waist measure is for the purpose of laying ofif the width of the front of the waist. The line of figures on the scale of the long measure represents the proper length less two inches. On the line marked Half of long, figures representing the long measure are placed opposite to divisions calculated by the following formula:-
long measure-2 inches (TAP inch);
to divisions actually one-fourth of those represented; and on the line marked Waist,
are figures referring to divisions, which on those of the figures referring to childrens sizes are actually one-third of those represented, and on those of the figures referring to ladies sizes are one-third of such distances less two and one-half inches (an allowance for darts).
I claim 1. The pattern board for waists of dresses,-
having the graduated straight edge A, B, the outside edge B, D, of elliptical curvature forming a guide for the darts, seams and side of the back, and the outside edge 0, D, of substantially parabolic curvature forming a guide for the arm-scye and extending from the end of the edge B, D, substantially as described.
2. The pattern board for waists of dresses, having the graduated straight edge A, B, the
outside edge B, D,of elliptical curvature forming a guide for the darts, seams and side In testimony whereof I have hereunto set of the back, the outside edge 0, D-, of subimy hand this 27th day of December, A. D. stantially parabolic curvature forming a 1888.
guide for the arm-scye and extending from THALIA E. SIPE. 5 the end of the edge B, D, and the internal Witnesses:
elliptical curve E, F, forming a guide for the i W. B. CORWIN,
neck, substantially as described. THOMAS W. BAKEVVELL.
