SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,140, dated May 9, 1893.

Be it known that I, OSCAR M. STEPPACHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1. is a front View of my improved fastener. Fig. 2. is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3. a view showing portions of a collar and neck tie band, illustrating method of connecting the fastener thereto.

My invention relates to fasteners for neckties, and has for its object the provision of a simple and novel device that when attached will prevent the band of a scarf or similar ar ticle of apparel from being displaced.

My improved fastener is made of a single length of spring wire, turned and returned upon itself to compose a rear oviform bow, A, and front pin, 13, the upper end of each side of the bow being turned outwardly for a purpose presently set forth.

The fastener is constructed of a single length of spring wire, bent as follows:Commencing at the point, 1, the wire is bent to form an outward curve, a, and from thence is continned, in an inwardly inclined line, up to curve, I), which is in an oppositedirection to the line of lower curve, a, from this upper curve the wire is continued in an outwardly inclined oblique line, the wire is then overturned at the upper end, as seen at 2, and is then continued downwardly, in parallel alignment with that of the previous portion, to central point of inverted arch, 3,thus composing one side of the rear bow, A, and of upper V- shaped branch, 4. Continuing from center of lower arch,3, the wire is turned and returned to form opposite side of back, A, which consists essentially of a lower oviform section and upper branchyi, all composed of two aligning strands of wire, as plainly illustrated in the drawings, the back being on a surface plane. The curves, h, by means of spring action of arch, 3, normally bear against each other,but

are separated by slight pressure, by action hereinafter described: After the section, A, has been conformed, in the manner and form described and illustrated, the'wire at the front side is turned upwardly to form pin,B, which consists of staff, 5, extending upwardly in a right line to bend, 6, from which it is continued downward to compose the pin proper, which has a sharpened point 7. As will be seen the pin,l3, extends verticallyin a median line, a slight distance forwardly of rear section, A.

In practice the pin is inserted in the scarf band and then the fastener is looped under the lower edge of a collar, when the upper closed branch, 4:, comes in contact with post of button 0, said branch will separate with slight pressure permitting the device to be elevated, and said branch after passing said post will immediately spring back; by this means and the lower end of the collar resting on forwardly inclined curve, at lower end of staff, 5, the pin, B, having been inserted in the scarf band there will be no risk of anyv displacement of said band either vertically or laterally.

As an improved article of manufacture, a neck-tie fastener, composed of a continuous length of spring wire, having a rear oviform section, A, of aligning strands extending upwardly to inward converging curves, l), above which the wire is bent and returned in opposite outwardly diverging lines, composing V- shaped branch, 4, the wire being turned upwardly in a continuous vertical line parallel with section, A, at a median point thereof and slight distance from plane of said section, forming staif, 5, said staff then bent to form upper curve, 6, from which curve the wire is continued downward in alignment with said staff to compose.pin,B, having sharpened terminal point, 7, substantially as described.
