ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO-PAILS.'

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,477, dated May 2, 1893.

Beit known that I, WYMAN H. A. GODFREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colon, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Tobacco-Pails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled [O in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a very simple device by the use of which tobacco may be kept damp and moist while being transported in pails. This object I accomplish by the use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features of the same which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the annexed drawings, Figure l isa view 2 5 showing a tobacco pail in section and mya'ttachment in elevation in position in the pail. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the attachment removed from the pail.

The tobacco pail A may be of any desired 0 size and is of the usual or any preferred construction.

My improved attachment consists essentially of a receptacle B adapted to fit snugly in the top of the pail and to hold an absorbent packing H such as sponge, cotton, &c. This receptacle may be constructed of any light, impervious material, preferably sheet metal, and it is provided at its upper edge with an annular flange O which is adapted to 40 rest upon the upper edge of the pail and thereby support the attachment within the same. The inner wall of the receptacle is shorter and may be provided around its upper edge Withaseries of perforations D which permit the vapor rising from the packing to pass over the tobacco. A small portion of the receptacle is covered by a stationary plate E which is secured rigidly upon the flange O and is provided at its inner edge with the lip F as shown. A swinging cover G is hinged to the stationary plate E and is of the proper size to extend over the pail. The vapor will thus be prevented from escaping from the bucket, the lip F serving as a cover or guard to prevent the same passing through the 5 5 small space between the inner edge of the swinging cover and stationary plate, or it may be constructed without said cover the cover of the pail being used for said purpose.

In practice, the attachmentis placed in the upper end of the pail either before or after the tobacco has been placed therein, as may be preferred. An absorbent packing is then placed in the receptacle and this packing is saturated with water. As the water evaporates the moisture rising therefrom will pass over into the central space of the pail and, as it cannot escape through the cover, it will pass into the tobacco and consequently keep the same moist. It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple and efficient device by the use of which tobacco will be prevented from becoming dry and valueless.

While my attachment is intended more especiall; for tobacco pails it can be used in other connections, such as sugar barrels.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An attachment for tobacco pails consisting of an annular removable receptacle adapted to fit snugly in the upper end of the pail, and provided .with a lid to prevent the escape of vapor and an absorbent packing placed in said receptacle.

2. An, attachment for tobacco pails consisting of an annular receptacle fitting within the pail" and having an annular external flange resting on the edge of the pail, where-. by it is removably supported therein, a lid to prevent the escape of vapor and an absorbent packing placed in the said receptacle.

3. The improved attachment for tobacco pails, consisting of the removable annular receptacle adapted to fit in the upper end of 5 the pail, the stationary plate extending over a part of the said receptacle and provided with a lip at its inner edge, and a cover hinged to said plate above said lip and extending over the receptacle.
