E. J. WOODBURY & J. LE VEQUE.
DEVICE FOR KEEPING TOBACCO MOIST.
Patented Dec. 5, 1882 Lilhognpher. Washington. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
EDWARD J. WOODBURY AND JOHN LE VEQUE, OF ROOHESTER, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR KEEPING TOBACCO MOIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,588, dated December 5, 188i Application filed September 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownv that we, EDWARD J. W001)- BURY and JOHN LE VEQUE, both of Rochester,
in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Devices for Keeping Tobacco Moist, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
. tailed therefrom is the object of our invention,
and we efi'ect this by forming a hole in the top or cover of the receptacle, and insert therein a perforated cup or bowl designed to contain a substance or body-such, for instance, as a sponge saturated with Water or other diluted liquid--which bowl or cup extendsto some distance below the cover-of the receptacle and into the surrounding tobacco, means" being employed 'to prevent any water escaping into the tobacco.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section of the bowl with its cover and aportion of the cover of the pail or vessel holding the tobacco, and Fig. 2 a view looking down on top of the bowl.
B is the top or cover of the vessel holding" ther provided with numerous perforations b through its shell, below thecover B of the tobacco-pail. The-bowl is intended to receive a sponge, wad of cotton, or other suitable absorbent for water, well saturated, the vapor from which, passing through the openings 1),
communicates moisture to the tobacco to sup-' sponge should the latter at any time be over-- saturated, and the water'lodging at c at any time acts as a reserve to be reabsorbed by the sponge as the latter becomes dried from evaporation. The perforations b are made through the shell, so as to incline downward from without, as shown, so that any water that may be pressed from the sponge in them will flow inward to the basin 0, and not drain into the tobacco. V p
The bowl, not being fastened to the coverB of the pail, may be readily transferred from one pail to another, so that as one pail is emptied said bowl may be inserted in the cover of another filled with tobacco. If the tobacco becomes too moist, the cover B may be partially removed from the bowland allow the water to evaporate outward at the top.
By the use of this device the sponge may be removed and cleansed at any time, or resaturated and replaced within the bowl by merely removing the cover E, and without opening the tobacco-pail; and the bowl may at any time be removed for the purpose of washing, and replaced without loosening any screws or other fastenings, or opening the pail by removing the cover thereof.
It is found that in using the devices heretosplashed into the tobacco from the bowl, only the vapor of the water passing through said perforations coming in contact with the tobacco, as above stated; and this device is very cheaply produced. r
This device may be employed to keep other articles besides tobacco moist, which require to be kept in a state of dampness.
What we claim as our invention is-- 1. In combination, the cover B of a receptacle for holding tobacco, provided with an opening, 01, through the same, and the perforated bowlD, inserted in said opening and made removable therefrom, and resting upon the cover B by means of a shoulder, a, said bowl being provided with a tight cover, F, substan tially as shown and specified.
2. In combination with the cover B of a receptacle for holding tobacco, provided with an opening, d, through the same, the perforated i bowl D, inserted in' said opening d and resting upon the cover B by means of a shoulder, a, said bowl being provided with a tight cover, F, and basin 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the cover B, the bowl I), placed in an opening, 6?, in said cover, and provided with perforations I) through its side, below the cover B, said openings being inclined down ward and inward, and said bowl being provided with a basin, 0, substantially as shown and described.
EDWARD J. WOODBURY. JOHN LE VEQUE.
