TOBAGOO PAIL 00723.
(No Model.)
'No. 280,844. Patented July 10, 1888.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA B. MOINTYRE, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
TOBACCO-PAIL COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,844, dated July 10, 1883.
Application filedMai-ch B, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA B. MOINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Tobacco-Pails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an inverted. plan view of my cover. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the crown of the dome removed.-
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for pails containing fine-cut tobacco having means for holding a wet sponge or other suitable material on a plane above the top of the receptacle upon which the cover is placed.
My invention consists .of a cover having a dome for the reception of the sponge or other material, having a horizontal flange, the dome being perforated above said flange for the reception of pins for the support of the sponge, also having perforations at its top, as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cover, A, having a horizontal flange, a, the latter being provided with ribs a, which prevent lateral displacement of the cover. The cover is perforated at b I) immediately above the horizontal flange a, for the reception of the pins 0, which support the sponge in the dome of the cover.
In the drawings I have shown two pins passing through the cover at right angles to each other, which support the sponge B. The cover is perforated in its top, as at ed, to permit ventilation and allow surplus water to escape when wetting the sponge before placing I do not confine myself to covers for tobacco-pails, as it may be used to advantage on other receptacles.
Changes in form and proportion of parts of my device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention.
It will be observed that the pins hold the moist material above the top of the receptacle and out of contact with the tobacco.
The entire cover maybe made in one piece, although the flange and top may be made separately and suitably secured, if desired.
The salient points of my invention are simplicity, cheapness, durability, and facility for wetting the sponge and removing the surplus water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The cover A, having perforations b b, and horizontal flange a, in combination with pins 0, supported in the cover above said flange, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The cover A, having the flange a, ribs a, and perforations b a in combination with pins 0 and pail or other receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA B. MOINTYRE.
