' 0. S; FOSTER;
SPRING BED.
Patented May 2,1893..
OSCAR S. FOSTER, OF U'IIOA, NEW YORK.
SPRING-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,404, dated May 2, 1893.
Application led April 22, 1892. Serial No. 430,166. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR S. Fosrnn, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds; and I do hereby declare th at thefollowin g isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters and iigures of reference- .part of this specification and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to the same parts in the several views, Figure l shows a plan view of aportion of the bed. Fig. 2 shows a partial end view of the same, the bed slight-ly turned on its central hinge in the act of folding. Fig. 3 shows a clasp used in securing the stay wires or stay-wires and springs. Fig. t showsa spring Without an arm in connection wit-h the stay-wire and a clasp engaging the stay-Wire and spring. Fig. 5 shows a spiral arm spring and in connection with stay or cross wires, and a clasp. Fig. 6 showsa complete double cone spiral arm spring, such as may be used in the bed in connection with stay wires and securing clasps.
The bed is composed of a number of double cone spiral springs as l and 2, preferably arranged in rows or courses each way across the face of the bed, the upper and lower convolutions of the several springs lying in the plane of, and forming in part the upper and lower faces of the bed respectively. The row of springs around the outside of each section of the bed are preferably arm springs 2 having an arm 2a formed out of the same piece of wire as the spring and extending radially therefrom in the plane of the end of the spring and provided with a hook on its outer end.
The bed is composed of two sections as Al f and B. Each section is provided on the under side with border wire frame 3. The arms of the several bordersprings 2 engage the border frame 4.. Longitudinally across the faces of the bed are provided bracing or stay wires '7 having their ends secured to the border row of arm springs by means of the clip hereinafter described and by being twisted around the wire of the spring as shown at a, the wires 7 engage at the edges of the convolutions of the springs. Transversely across the faces of the bed are provided stay wires 10 which pass diametrically across the face convolutions of the springs and are secured on the opposite sides of the frame in the case of the upper face to the frame at 8 and to the central hinge wire 6 at 9. At the point where the longitudinal and transverse wires `7 and lO cross is provided a clip or clasp 11. The clasp is formed in U or V shape and has a hole in each branch through which one of the wires is passed, the other stay wire being previously placed within the space below the holes together with the convolution of the spring. The clasp is then pounded down iat, which bends the stay wire passing through the holes of the clasps at the point where it engages spring and other cross wires.
The wire that passes through the openingbetween the clasp and stay wire is provided with an off-set of a width to receive the clasp and when the clasp is engaged therein, it is prevented from moving or working along the wire.
Over the whole upper surface of the bed is provided a wire fabric, a portion of which is shown at F. The fabric is secured at its edges by having the arms 2a of the arm springs inserted through it and the fabric draws against the upper convolution of the spring as a shoulder.
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a spring bed having stay wires crossing each other substantially In Witness whereof I have aixed my signa.- ture in presence of two Witnesses.
OSCAR S. FOSTER.
