FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,214, dated April 25, 1893. Application lecl November 21, 189.2- Serial No. 452,733. (No model.) l
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WILMOT, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the following, when takenin connection'with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to understand, make, and use the same.
The object of my invention is to obtain a file for the placing of papers therein, that can be easily and readily placed in a cabinet, desk or case therefor, and closed when not in use, that can be partially opened for use, or wholly removed fromthe cabinet for any purpose, as for the placing of the same, with its contents in a vault, and further to obtain a ile into which papers can be readilyplaced and secured in position, easily inspected and from which papers can be quickly taken.
I have illustrated my invention by the drawings hereinbefore referred to wherein Figure l, is a front view of part of a desk containing two of the files embodying my invention therein; Fig. 2, a front view of a cabinet having two of such Iiles therein; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4 of Fig-3, also viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 5, a view on an enlarged scale of one of the filedrawers illustrated in Fig. 4, with the follower board thereof loosened; Fig. 6, a view of the same parts illustrated in Fig, 5, but with the follower board secured in place; and Fig. 7,
a section on line 7--7 of Fig. 6 viewed in the.
direction indicated by the arrows.
The same letter of reference is used to` indicate a given part where more than one View thereof is shown in the several ligures of the drawings.
X, is the frame-work of one end of a desk.
Y, is the cabinet.
A, is the file-drawer and consists of a front o, having handle a thereon, sides a2, a3, respectively, end a4 and bottom of'. End a4 is, of course, not an essential part of the ledrawer A unless it be desired to secure on the side edges thereof, the rollers or equivalent thereof, hereinafter described, and in such case the end a4 may be extended above the sides 0.2, as, and the rollers or equivalent thereof secured to the edges as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
B, is a follower board in file-drawer A. Follower board B is designed to be slid in filedrawer A, so as to hold the contents of the file-d rawer in asubstantially upright position and to be there secured. In order to so secure this follower board B, and at the same time to permit of its being readily removed from such position, when the contents'of the Iiledrawer A are desired lto be inspected or removed therefrom, or additional articles are to be placed therein, I provide the adjustable holder C, which is secured to follower board B, and adapted to engage with sides a2, a3, respectively, of the file-drawer. Adjustable holder C consists of the vertical slide D, clasps E, E', respectively, and the several connecting parts and devices about to be described.
d, is a groove in vertical slide D; and d', is a pin extending through groove d and secured in follower board B.
e, e, respectively, are grooves in clasps E, E', respectively.
e', e', are pins extending through grooves e, e, respectively, and secured in follower board B, or if preferred, i'n base F, which base in turn is secured to the follower board B by pins'or nails f, f. l
The base F, it will be understood is not essential in the construction or operation of the adjustable holder C, being employed, when used at all, for convenience of construction and attachment of the holder to the follower board and to enable me to make such follower board of thin and light material.
G, G', respectively, are groovesv in vertical slide D; and g, g', respectively, are pins extending through grooves G, G', respectively,
and secured in clasps E, E', respectively. It
will be observed that the clasps E, E', are, before the securing of the pins g, gl therein, respectively, duplicates, and that after the securing of such pins g, g', therein, respect? ively, said clasps are rightand left clasps, and are adapted to slide inward and outward on pins e', e', extending through grooves e, e,
IOC)
respectively, and further, that when the vertical slide D is moved into the position illustrated in Fig. 5, such clasps E, E', will be moved into theireXtrenie outward or extended position by pins g', g', in grooves G, G', respectively, and that when the vertical slide D- is moved into the position illustrated in Figs. et and 6 of the drawings, sncli clasps will be moved into the extreme inward or retracted position thereof, permitted by the sides a2, a3, respectively, of the file-drawer A, against which sides such clasps are brought in contact. It will be observed that the grooves G, G', are, respectively, curved outward at the lower end thereof, andthat thereby, as the vertical slide D is raised into the position illustrated in Fig. 5, of the drawings, the outward movement of the clasps E, E', respectively, is greater, in proportion to the extent of movement of the vertical slide D, when such vertical slide is iieai its extreme iipward position than when such slide is near its extreme downward position,as illustrated in Fig. G, and hence in the downward movement of the vertical slide D from its extreme upward position, the inward movement of the clasps E, E', is, respectively, greater at first than is such movement when the vertical slide D is near its extreme downward position, or the position illustrated in Figs. 4t and G of the drawings. The purpose of this construction is to obtain a firm lock of the clasps E, E', on the sides a2, c3, respectively, of the file-drawer A, while, at the same time, sufiicient movement is quickly obtained in such clasps to wholly unlock the saine from the sides of the file-drawer, in the movement of the vertical slide D.
In order to readily move the file-drawer with its contents in the cabinet Y or desk X, or to easily remove it wholly from such cabinet or desk, and to safely leave it at any desired position, as for instance at the place where the same is illustrated in Fig. 3, I mount such iiledrawer in the cabinet or desk in the following manner: In the cabinet ordesk there is rotatably mounted the roller IVI on the upper face of which the bottom a5 of the le drawer A rests. There is also secured in the cabinet or desk, rails I, I', forming the way J, in which way rollers mounted on sides a2, a3, or if preferred, on the edges of end et, respectively, of the iile-di'awerA, are adapted to travel.
In the operation of the device when the iiledrawer A is withdrawn or partially withdrawn from the cabinet Y or desk X, when the center of gravity of such tile-drawer and its contents is to the left, as viewed in Fig. 3, of the roller II, the respective rollers K, K', iii way J, will rest upon rail I and travel thereon, and when such center of gravity is to the right of the roller I-I, the respective rollers K, K', will rest against the under face of the rail I and travel thereon, and that thereby the file-drawer will be prevented from falling out of its cabinet or ease, while, at the saine time, such Iile drawer can be wholly withdrawn from its cabinet or case, the rollers K, K', respectively, in such case Will be wholly withdrawn from the way J. The principal advantage obtained by me in the last described construction is that when the iiledrawer is wholly Withdrawn from the cabinet or desk thereof, the rollers K, K', being placed on the sides of the file-drawer, so that the periphery thereof is above the bottom of the iiledraweigsuch file-drawercan be placed on the top of any desk or table as readily as if such rollers were not secured thereon. It follows that the object sought by this construction will be attained, if the rails I, I', are raised from the position Wlierein the saine are illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, in the cabinet or desk so that the rollers K, K', are placed at any point on the sides a2, a3, orcdge of end a4, respectively, above the position where the same are shown.
It will be evident that if, by the above construction, suiiieieut friction is not produced in the movement of the tile-drawer A the rollers K, K', respectively, may be made non-rotatable, thereby increasing the friction resulting in the drawing in or pulling 'out of the file-drawer, and hence for the purpose of this construction such rollers or lugs or projections may be employed.
Ilaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. InA a file, a file-drawer, a follower board therein, and an adjustable holder secured to the follower board, such holder consisting of a vertically movable slide, and horizontally movable clasps connected with the vertical slide and actuated thereby, such clasps being adapted to engage with the sides of the filedrawer when retracted by the movement ol the vertical slide and to be disengaged therefrom when extended by such vertically movable slide; substantially as described.
2. In a tile, a tile drawer, a roller rotatably mounted in the case, on which roller the file drawer rests, a groove forming a guide-way in the case above the bottom of the file drawer and adjacent to the sides thereof and means secured to the sides of the iile drawer adapted to travel in the grooves forming the guideways adjacent thereto; substantially as described.
3. In a iile, a file-drawer, a roller rotatably mounted in the case, on which roller the filedrawer rests, grooves forming guide-ways in the case above the bottom of the file-drawer and adjacent to the sides thereof, and rollers secured 'to such sides of the file-drawer adapted to travel in the grooves forming guideways adjacent thereto, respectively, substantially as described.
