w/TNESSES: /NVENTOH Colonel EZISwm/z mscleu @M 6/ BY m KM ATTHNEY.
UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE..-
COLONEL ELLSW'ORTH AMSDEN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,180, dated April 25, 1893. Application filed September 19, 1892. Serial No. 446,253. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, COLONEL ELLswoRTH AMSDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved hinge, and its object is to provide a device that may be preliminarily adj usted and properlylocated relative to the parts to which it is to be attached before finally securing it in place, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an elevation of a hinge embodying my invention, together with a portion of a door and the casing to which it is attached; Fig. 2 the same showing a modified form of my device; Fig. 3 a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 a detail cfa part 'of the device; Fig. 5 a horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 6 a detail of the T head tack or nail used in the modified form of Fig. 2.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a portion of the jamb, or casing to which the door is hinged; B a portion of the door; C the hinge having the usual screw holes C', for inserting screws into the jamb and door. n
My invention consists in providing the leaf of said hinge (preferably the one to be attached to the jamb, but either or both may have the same) with means for preliininaryadjustment, which consists of an enlarged opening D, over which is a plate E pivoted at one end, and swinging laterally over said opening, in which plate is a vertical slot F opposite said openlng. slot and driven into the j amb, being left slack enough to permit the' plate E, andthe hinge leaf to which it is pivoted to move on and about said nail, for the purpose of adjusting said leaf horizontally or vertically to the eX- tent permitted by the openingD therein. The hinge is finally secured by screws inserted in the openings C C in the usual way.
The device shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6, is cheaper and quite efficient for light work. In this case the plate E is omitted and a tack, or nail, having an elongated or T head to engageand move about freely upon the surface of the leaf of the hinge is used the tack or nail being considerably smaller than the opening D as in the other form. Various other temporary fastenings permitting like adjustment of the hinge may be devised.
I do not limit myself to the precise forms shown, butl. In combination with a hinge, a temporary fastening, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a hinge in addition to the usual screw openings an enlarged opening, and a nail or its equivalent passing through said opening, and engaging the outer surface of the hinge, substantially as described.
3. In combination wit-h a hinge having an enlarged opening in the leaf, a slotted plate pivoted to said leaf, and swinging over said opening, and a nail or its equivalent passing through said slotted opening and the opening in the leaf, substantially' as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
COLONEL ELLSWORTII AMSDEN.
