SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,130, dated April 25, 1893. Application filed September 13, 1892- Serial No. 445,736. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that. I, SOHEYER NATHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purses, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved purse which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and into which, money can be placed, and from which the money can be removed without requiring the opening of any covers, doors or analogous devices.

The invention consists in the combination with a bag, of a frame held in the opening of the same, two covers hinged at opposite ends of said frame to swing downwardly and inwardly and springs acting on said covers to keep them in raised position, which covers, when raised, completely close the opening of the frame.

The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved purse closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view closed. Fig. A is a similar view open.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The purse is constructed with a frame A preferably made Ushaped with the opening at the bottom, and into said frame the upper edges of the pouch or bag B are placed, which pouch or bag may be made of leather, fabric, crochet-work or any other suitable material. The upper edge of the bag is held in place by a filling piece 0 placed in said hollow under side of said frame and suitably held in place. To the ends of said frame two covers D are hinged along the bottom edges in such a manner that they can swing inward and downward. The pintles D of the hinges of said gates are each surrounded by a helical spring E, of which one end E bears against the under side of the frame of the purse and the other end E bears against the under side of a cover D to hold the same in raised position.

The covers are of such size that when both are in raised position they just fill the opening of the frame A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. To prevent the straining of the hinges when the covers are thrown up forcibly by their springs, said covers are provided near their swinging ends with the laterally-projecting lugs G that can strike against the bottom edges of the frame A. Normally the covers .are in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 3,

and when coins are to be placed into the purse, they are held between the fingers and pressed down upon the covers, which givesufliciently to let the coin pass and then close immediately when the pressure of the fingers is removed. When coins are to be removed the fingers are suitably placed upon the two covers or gates at about the middle of the same and said covers forced downward so as to permit the fingers to grasp the coins. As the fingers are withdrawn the gates close automatically. The swinging edges of the gates or covers are rounded so that they do not cut or bruise the fingers. The catches or snaps required heretofore on purses and which are 'never reliable are entirely dispensed with in my improved purse and the construction is extremely simple, durable and strong.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a bag, of a frame fixed in the opening of the same, two covers hihged to the opposite ends of said frame to swing downwardly and inwardly into the bag, which covers are of such size that when raised they close the opening in the frame entirely, and which covers have their swinging ends rounded off from top to bottom, and springs acting on said covers to hold them in raised position, whereby money can be placed into and removed from the purse without requiring the special opening or closing of any gate, door or cover, substantially as set forth.
