CHARLES B. OVERBAUGH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,907, dated April 18, 1893. Application filed July 2, 1892. Serial N0.438.809. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, CHARLES E. OVERBAUGH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing-Boxes-or Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved box or carrier for-holding delicate articles of any kind; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a top view, the cover or lid being omitted. Fig. II is a transverse section, showing a different arrangement of pockets, or partitions to that shown in Fig. I; that is to say, in Fig. I there are three rows of pockets, while in Fig. II there are only two upper rows of pockets. Fig. III is a detail, perspective View; and Fig. IV is a detail, plan View.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a box of any suitable length and width. Within the box is arranged a number of pockets 2, each pocket extending the full length of the box, and being divided into anumber of cells formed by lips 3 produced by cutting the bottoms of the boxes, and turning up the portions thus cut, as clearly shown in Figs. III and IV. Each pocket consists of a bottom portion 4, a single side portion 5, end portions 6, the lips 3, which form the cells, and end and bottom reinforce 10. A portion of a blank from which a pocket is formed is shown in Fig. IV. A transverse slit 7 is cut in each blank, near each end, and the blank is then folded on the dotted lines, as shown in Fig.
IV, thus bringing the side and ends into a right-angled position with relation to the bottom. The bottom is also cut, as'shown by the full lines 8, and the lips thus formed are bent upward on the dotted lines to form the cells. These pockets are placed in the box with the closed side of one pocket fitting against the open side of the adjacent pocket, so that the sides of the pockets form the partitions between the different pockets. Each pocket having but one integral side, it will be seen that as soon as a pocket is emptied it can be removed, and when it is removed, one side of the cells of the adjacent pocket will be exposed, thus providing for the easy removal of the goods.
9 represents horizontal partitions or covers, which may be placed over each series of pockets.
It will be seen that the pockets may be of any desired width, so that two, three, four or more horizontal series may be arranged in a box, as shown in Fig. II.
I claim as my invention 1. A box or carrier-pocket formed integral with a bottom 4 having lips 3, with a closed side 5, with closed ends 6, with an open top, and with an open side; substantially as described.
2. A box or carrier-pocket formed integral with a bottom 4, having lips 3, with a closed side 5, with closed ends 6, with bottom reinforce pieces 10, with an open top, and with an open side; substantially as described.
CHAS. B; OVERBAUGH.
In presence of E1). S. KKIGHT, ALBERT" M. EBERSOLE.
