CHRISTMAS-TREE CANDLE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,641, dated April 18, 1893.

To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HEINRICH SCHLUETER,

' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stapleton, Richmond county, New York State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Christmas Tree Candle- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved de vice for holding candles on Christmas trees; and the object of my invention is to provide a candle-holder of this kind which is simple in construction and cheap and holds the candle firmly and securely on the tree and permits of readily applying the candle to the holder and the holder to the tree.

The invention consists in a Christmas tree candle-holder, composed of two sections, each provided with a projecting arm and a springband surrounding such sections and pressing them toward each other, said band serving to clamp the candle between-the upper ends of the sections and to press the lower ends of the sections against a branch inserted between them.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved Christmas tree candle-holder empty. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the two sections of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a side-view, showing the candle inserted. Fig. 4. is a horizontal sectional View, on line 4 4:, of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side-view, showing the candle inserted and the holder applied to a branch of the tree, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view, on line 6 6, Fig. 5.

The holder is composed of two stamped sheet-metal sections a and a, each provided in its upper wider portion with a longitudinal internal groove b, so that when the two sections are placed with their innerfaces adjacent to each other, the said two grooves b form a socket for receiving the candle c. The upper ends of the sections a a are slightly flared outwardly, so as to facilitate inserting'the candle. Each section a a is provided with an L-shaped arm (1 and cl projecting from the edge. When the two sections are placed together with their inner faces in contact, the

two L-shaped arms appear at the opposite edges in the holder. Above the arms 01 d a rubber band e, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, or an annular helical spring 6', is passed around the two sections and presses the inner surfaces of said sections against each other. The holder is thus composed of two sections having L-shaped arms and a spring surrounding such sections. The candle is introduced and spreads the upper ends of the two sections, the lower ends of said sections being in contact, as shown in Fig. 3, and the bandeor spring e slightly extended. To apply the holder on the branch f of the tree, the holder is held between the two fingers resting against the ends of the arms (:1 d, and said ends of the arms are pressed toward each other, the upper ends of thesections resting againstthe candle, which gives the fulcrum on which the sections swing, and the lower ends of the sections are thus moved from each other more or less, permitting of inserting the branch f between them. By thus pressing the arms together and swinging the lower ends of the sections from each other the elastic band or ring e e is brought in greater tension. As soon as the holder is released the spring or band 2' presses the lower ends of the sections against the branch f, whereby the holder is securely clamped on the branch. -The lower part of each section is preferably provided with projections or indentations a on the inside to better grasp the branch, and the lower ends of the sections are serrated also to insure a better hold. The candle is held firmly and securely, but at the same time the pressure is not so great as to cause the holder to cut into the candle. The holder is held so se curely on the branches as to prevent it from toppling over or falling off.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A Christmas tree candle-holder, composed of two sections, each provided with an L-shaped arm and a spring-band surrounding said sections and pressing them toward each other, substantially as set forth.
