Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN B. HUTCHINSON, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, GEO. W. RAY, AND V. N. TAYLOR, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSA-- l OHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER COLLARS.
l Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 49,347, dated August 8, 1865. y
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN B. HUTGHIN- soN, of Nashua, Hillsborough county,State of lNew Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Paper Collars; and Ido hereby declare that thefollowingisafullaud exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that kind of collars known as Byron7 or turn-down,7 and consists of a collar the surface of which is partially enameled, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter described.
Enameled collars as commonly manufac-V tured are cut from sheets of enameled paper by means of knives of the desired shape, and are afterward folded. This operation causes the enamel to crack and break along the folded edge, and also in wearing an enameled surface comes in contact with the wearers neck, and the perspiration soon loosens the enamel, so that it rubs oft, making it very uncomfortable to the wearer, and presenting a very disagreeable appearance.
To obviate this difficulty the exterior part usually bent over has been made of a different material from the band, and attached to it but avoiding the cracking and breaking along the folded edge, and thus forming as smooth and even a folded edge as a plain paper collar; second, avoiding the wearing olf of the enamel, as described, the inner surface having no enamel on it, but being in all respects like a plain collar; and, third, greatly cheapening their manufacture by saving the enamel usually applied to a large part of the surface of the collar, and to the waste paper in the sheets from which they are cut.
Now,having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A' paper collar` part of the surface of which is enameled, as herein described.
