ROBERT CASPER TAMBS, OF MAGOG, CANADA.
BREAST-COLLAR COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,311, dated March 14, 1893.
Application filed August 4, 1892.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT CASPER TAMBS, of Magog, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Collar Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a breast collar or strap applied to a horse, and provided with my improved coupling. Fig. 2, is an enlarged view of a portion of the breast strap disjointed, and having my improved coupling. Fig. 3, is a like view showing the same coupled; and Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section of the same. I
My invention has for its object to readily couple two sections of a breast collar or strap at the front, whereby unfastening is prevented when the harness is in use, and be readily coupled and uncoupled when the harness is being placed on or removed from a horse, and to allow a harness to be suspended and dropped onto a horse, and the horse be harnessed ready to start when the coupling is coupled.
My invention consists of a plate coupling composed of two members, one having two headed studs in alignment longitudinally of the plates, and the other member having two curved slots diagonal to the alignment of the studs, said slots at opposite ends provided with enlargements to receive the head of the studs, whereby the studs and slots interlock when coupled by placing the two sections of the breast strap at a certain angle to one another, and are prevented from unlocking when the breast strap assumes its normal horizontal position, said two plates riveted to the sections of the breast strap longitudinally therewith, at or near the subdivided ends.
The breast strap consists of two sections A, A, connected at the front by my improved coupling, which is composed of two plates B, B, secured respectively to the breast strap sections A, A, by rivets 0, near the ends of said sections.
The coupling plate member B, projects Serial No. 442,120. (No model.)
slightly beyond the end of the breast strap section A, and has two headed studs D, D, in alignment longitudinally with the plate and strap, and the other coupling plate member B, has an abutment which projects beyond the end of the strap A, and said abutmentis provided with two curved slots E, E, the concavity of the curves facing one another, and said slots are each diagonal outwardly from a line longitudinal of the middle of the plate, so that the inner end of the slots align with the studs of plate B, when both plates are coupled, and the end of the slots outwardly or near opposite edges of the plate are provided with an enlargement G, which admits the head of .the studs when the two sections of the breast strap are at an abnormal position, which would be when the said sections are at an obtuse angle to one another as shown in Fig. 2, so that after the head of the studs enter the enlargement G, of the slots, the studs will travel therein when the sections of the breast strap drop to ahorizontal position or in alignment, and the two sections will be prevented from falling below said position by the studs engaging the ends of the slots.
The plates A, A, are preferably curved to correspond to the breast of a horse and free of the windpipe, whereby the collar or strap will fit snugly and not chafe the skin of the animal.
I claim as my invention- 1. A breast collar or strap coupling, comprising two coupling plates B, B, both provided with rivet holes 0, plate B, having a headed stud D, near one end and a headed stud D, toward the opposite end, and the other plate B, provided with an abutment to overlap a portion of said plate B, said abutment having diagonal curved slots E, E, the outward end of said slots provided with an enlargement G, to admit the head of the studs when both plates intersect one another, whereby the shanks of the studs travelin the slots and couple the plates by the studs and slotsinterlocking, when said plates arebrought into alignment, as set forth.
2. The combination with the strap or collar sections A, A, of the coupling plates 13, the studs and slots interlock to couple said B, secured thereto respectively, said plate strap or collar sections when said plates are B, having headed studs D, D, and the plate brought into alignment, as set forth.
