SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent No. 492,963, dated March 7, 1893. Application iiledJ'uly 16, 1892. Serial No. 440,246. (No model.)

To all whom it may copcern:

Be it known that I, WARREN H. LAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefulIm provements in Toys and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to produce a toy, the essential features of which are a suitable case or box, an efigy in the form of a head which may be a representation of a noted person as for example a political candidate, which efgy when struck by a ball is displaced and another eftigy appears in its place. 'With this end in view IhaveV devised the novel toy which I will now describe referring by numbers to the accompanying drawings forming part ot this specification in which:

l denotes a suitable case which in the present instance I have made in the form of a barrel and which is provided wit-h an internal recess 2. Within the recess I place a spring 3, the normal action of which is to holdin the raised position a plate 4 carryingan eftigy 5. The top of the recess is closed by a plate 6 which is secured in placein any suitable manner and is provided with a central opening 7 through which the eftigy passes when raised by the spring, the said plate 6 serving as a stop to prevent plate 4 from being expelled from the case as clearly shown in Fig. 4.

8 denotes another efigy carried by a plate 9 the edge of which is tapered downward and inward like a cork to adapt it to tit in opening 7 with sufficient friction to remain there and hold eftigy 5 within the case against the power of the spring.

lO is a ball attached to an elastic cord ll. This cord may be attached either to the case, plate 6 or to eftgy 8. In the present instance I have shown it attached to eihgy 8 and said ettigy attached bya cord l2 to plate 6. If preferred the elastic cord may be attached to any other portion of the toy and eftigy 8 be left wholly disconnected.

The operation is as follows: Eftigy 5 is pressed down into the case against the power of the spring and retained there by inserting plate 9, in opening 7, leaving efIigyS exposed to view above the case. draws the bail back stretching the elastic cord and lets it go, the elasticity of the cord propels the ball against efigy 8 which it displaces allowing the spring to raise efflgy 5 into view. Suppose for instance that efgy 8 represents a candidate for office and efiigy 5 a rival candidate, the act-ion of the ball is to displace the candidate in view t'. e. knock him out whenv the spring instantly places the other candidate in view.
