Be it known that I, CHARLES LENFANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an improved flexible cover for Bibles and other books, by which the object-ions heretofore experienced are obviated and the rounded ofi corners of the cover are produced in a perfect smooth and durable condition. I

The invention consists of a cover made of a blank of suitable leather in which segmental corner-pieces are formed by cutting tapering recesses at both sides of the corner-piece and lapping the corner-pieces over the inwardly folded sides, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the inside-view of a portion of a flexible cover made according to one of the methods heretofore in use, the right hand side being finished so as to show a rounded off corner with crimped folds. Fig. 2 is an inside- View of a cover made according to my improved method. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailviews of one of the corners of the cover, showing the blank in different stages of manufacture. Fig. 5 is a detail-view of one of the corners of the cover, shown as completely finished, and Fig. 6 is a vertical transversesection on line 6 6, Fig.5.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a flexible cover for Bibles, prayer and other books, which cover is made of leather or other suitable material having the required degree of flexibility. The blank A from which the cover is made is provided with two tapering recesses a at each corner of the cover, said recesses a a. forming a corner-piece b that is connected for a short distance at its inner corner with the main-portion or body of the cover, while the diagonally opposite corner is provided with a quadrantal recess b, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The sides at and cornerpieces I) of the cover are skived or pared off so as to reduce the thickness of the same at the points where the corner-pieces overlap with the sides. The blank is shaped on a sheet metal form having rounded off corners, said blank corresponding to the size of the cover to be produced, the overlapping sides d at being bent inwardly over said form, after which the corner-pieces b are also bent over and shaped smoothly on the round corners of the form. After the form is withdrawn the overlapping sides and corner-pieces are pasted down and worked down, so that the cover is formed with rounded off and smooth corners, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. An interior lining e of thin smooth leather is then pasted over the inside of the cover and creased in a suitable manner toimpart a suitable finish to the same. A flexible cover with smooth and finished corners is thus obtained that extends over the body of the book and forms a neat, strong and durable cover for the same.

By myimproved method of cutting the blank so as to produce segmental corner-pieces, the unsightly crimping of the leather at the rounded off corners of the cover is avoided and a perfectly smooth and finished appearance imparted to said corners. At the same time the cover can be manufactured quicker and cheaper, as specially skilled hands are not required in making the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
