Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. TowsE, a

i citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Holders for Sewing-Machine Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to holders for sewing machine covers and has especial relation to a device adapted to firmly secure the covers of sewing machines against accidental displacement and against rattling or movement on the sewing machine when in place, the device being especially adapted to use on machines which are conveyed from place to place by salesmen or otherwise or in transportation.

The invention consists in the various comv structions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of the device embodied in my invention shown in position on a sewing machine. Fig. 2 is an end view of-a portion of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a front and side elevation of one end of the holder proper showing the arrangement of the spring-holding clamps by which the device is held firmly in position.

Like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference throughout the several views.

In the accompanying drawings, a, represents asewing machine, b the cover therefor adapted to rest thereon in the usual manner. The respective parts a and b may be provided with projections adapted to engage with suitable openings to prevent lateral movement thereon in the usual manner, or not as preferred.

My improved holding device consists essentially of a flexible band c preferably of webbing or other suitable fabric to which is attached at each end spring clamps d. These spring clamps CZ are formed preferably of a single piece of elastic or resilient metal formed with a central coil d and projecting ends d2 which ends are formed with engaging'hookshaped projections di which lie in a plane at right-angles to the plane of the coil d. These i hook-shaped ends d3 are eachprovided with a soft covering d4 preferably of rubber or other similar material. The construction of the spring clamps d is such that the coil d tends to force the projecting ends cl2 outwardly and at an angle to each other. In use the projecting ends d2 of the spring clamps are forced together as indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 3 so that they assume substantially a parallel position; one to the other. In this position the hook-shaped ends cl3 are slipped under the respective edges of the top or table of the machine a and are then released and by the elasticity of the coil OZ are forced outward to their normal positions, thereby drawing the iiexible band c tightly against the cover by reason of the angular position which the projecting ends d2 of the spring clamps assume.

It will be seen that the device as thus described is extremely simple and effective in its operation. By varying the tension upon the coil d', the adjustment may be varied to suit the requirements of any machine, the device being practically self-adjnsting, since by making the tension of the device sufficient to spread the arms to the limit of their outward movement an adjustment maybe secured practically equal to the length of said arms from the bottom of the coil to the top of' the hookshaped ends.

In order to adapt my improved holding device for use on machine covers of varying heights and size, I form the strap c in two sections as indicated at c2 and c3. Said sections being adjustably connected by a suitable buckleindicated at c4.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. A holder for sewing machine covers con` sisting essentially of a flexible band having attached thereto at each end spring clamps formed of resilient lnetal with a central coil and hook-shaped ends which lie in a plane substantially at right-angles with the plane of the coil, substantially as specified.

2. In a holder for sewing machine covers, the combination with the flexible band c, clamps ol having coils d between the arms d2, hook-shaped ends d3 and elastic coverings d4, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
