Description

J. RITZ. W0 OLDER.
No. 451,925. Patented May 12, 1.891.
- @mmm UNITED rnfrns Armar rricn,
JOHN LEO FRITZ, OF lVATERTOlVN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HOWARD BRAINARD, OF ADAMS, NEW' YORK.
WORK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,925, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed March 30, 1891. Serial N- 387,003. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, JOHN LEO FRITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Spool, Fabric-Holder and Thread-Cutter; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as 1o will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful Aimprovements in devices for use in holding spools, fabrics, the., and in cutting thread; and the invention has for its object to generally improve upon this class of devices, and to provide a simple and inexpensive device in which will be incorporated in a single element a spool-holder and a clamping device adapt-ed'to securely hold the fabric which is being operated upon, .a threadcutter, and a pineushion, the Whole being so arranged as to occupy but litt-le space, and so constructed as to adapt it to be readily and securely, attached to the edge of atable or lap-board.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fullyI hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings," and then specitically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, With'the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this speciication, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown as attached to the edge of a table. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings Aby letterA designates the body of the device, which consists of a piece of spring sheet metal bent at its longitudinal center, and having the inner face of the p0rtion A at a point near its free end provided with upwardlyextending .lugs or points d a. Rising from the upper face of the portion A2 of the device is a spool-holder B, which consists of a vertical rod or wire having its lower end secured to the upper face of the plate in any suitable manner.V
Within the curved portion of the strip A, directly beneath the spool-holder B, is secured a circular pincushionD, the same being held in placeby means of a metallic ring or band which is passed around the cushion and soldered or otherwise secured to the strip A.
Near the inner end of the portion A2 is a small triangularlug h, which is struck up from the face of the plate, and the sharpened edges of this lug serve as a convenient thread-cutting device.
Riveted to the lower face of the plate A is a supplemental spring-plate O, which from its point of attachment with the said plate is curved outwardly, or away from the plate A', and at a point near its eXtreme outer end it is bent inwardly at right angles to the face of the said plate, as shown at c, and the end thus bent inwardly is brought into contact with the face of the plate A said end being provided with a series of sharpened points (Z d.
In use the body portion of the device is sprung over the edge of a table, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the lugs a d serve to retain the device against lateral displacement, while the device is securely retained in place by the tension of the spring metal of which it is composed. The spool is placed upon the holder B, and the fabric which is being sewed may be held by the spring-arm C.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described device forholding a spool, pincushion, and fabric and for cutting thread, the same consisting of a body portion A, formed of a strip of spring metal bent at itslongitudinal center, `provided. With lugs a d, adapted to engage the under face of the table-top, the triangular lug b, rising from the upper face of the portion A', the spoolholder B, the supplemental plate O, secured tothe under face of the lower plate A and having its free vend bent at right angles to the body portion, notched, and adapted to bear against the face of the said plate, and the pineushion D, secured within the loop of the body portion of the device, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN LEO FRITZ.
