Description

UNITED STATES JOHN J. e. FISHER, oF FoxBoEoUeH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CLAMP FOR STRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,252, dated August 8, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. G. FISHER, of Foxborou gh, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Glamp or Holder for Straps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom panyin g drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved clamp with a strap attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section th rough the centerof the same.
My invention consists in a strap-fastener iu which the strapis secured at any required point by means ofa holding-plate working in a box or frame and operated by a screw or equivalent mechanical device forgiving the required pressure, whereby the strap is held firmly without any liability of' slipping, whether there bel mpre or less strain upon it, and, the ordinary tongue-buckle being dispensed with, no holes are required to be made in the strap.
v Io enable others skilled in the art to underv stand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the base of-the clamp, at one end ot which is formed a box or frame, B, the sides of which are left open to allow of the passage of the strap C, one end ot' which is permanently secured at a to the opposite end of the clamp A.
D is a holding-plate, which ts snugly within the box B, and is forced down upon the strap G by means of a thumb-screw, b, which works in the top ot' the box B, and is secured at its lower end to the plate D, the two surfaces between which the strap is conned being slightly roughened or corrugated, so. as to prevent it from slipping.
c c arestandards rising from the base of the clanlpA, between whichis hung the roll d, under which the strap C is passed, and which serves as a purchase over which to draw the strap tight, which can then be instantly secured in place by turning the screw b, without giving back or losing part of what has been gained rby drawing it up, as is the case when inserting the tongue ot an ordinary buckle, while (the roll el being of greater diameter than the ordinary roll of a buckle) more power can be applied, and the strap consequently drawn tighter.
It will thus be seen that the strap is held tirmly between the base of the clamp and the plate D without marrin g or otherwise injuring it, while the strap is not weakened by holes,
as when the ordinary tongue-buckle is used.V
When it is desired to release the end of the strap G it is simply necessary to raise the plate D by turning the screw b, when the stra is free to be drawn out as required.
Itis obvious that some other mechanical device than the screw b maybe employed to force down the holding-plateD upon the strap without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The above-described fastener will he found particularly useful in strapping baggage and heavy loads onto wagons, and' may be employed to great advantage to replace the ordinary 'tonguebuckle What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is- 'y Ihe holding-plate D, operated by the screw b,`or equivalent mechanicaldevice, in combination with the box or frame B, operating substantially as set forth.
